The AP 50k – “bigdogpckt5s Invitational”

Hey guys! I just finished up playing the second ever "bigdogpckt5s invitational". I made a much better effort at winning my own tourney this week as I finished in 5th place. I really thought I was going to stone-cold bubble the tourney because I was really short being 19 of 19 in chips and 18 people made the money. There ended up being an absurdly big pot on the bubble where "liqvandurr", the chip leader at the time, ended up 5-bet shoving all-in against "miguelprado". For those of you who don't know, "miguelprado" is Steve Gross. This guy, in my honest opinion, is THE BEST nl mtt player in the world! So on the bubble, with 19 left, "liqvandurr" 5-bet shoved Steve who was 3rd in the chips at the time with j7. Steve made the call with ak. The board flopped with blanks [More...]

The Gman’s Treatise on The Click-Back and Why it Shouldn’t be Used

The Click-Back and Why it Shouldn't be Used by: LPG I have been involved in a rolling discussion in the forums with a couple of players and it has centered around the use of a click back with a marginal hand. I thought that what would make sense here is to go through and lay out what I and some of the players that I routinely play with have done to decode and combat this maneuver based on what we understand about this move. I think it is fairly enlighting when you start to think about the click-back and in the end the conclusion is that the move is actually highly exploitable. To start lets think a little bit on when this move is used and what we are trying to accomplish in general in the situation and look at [More...]

100k+ Fields Ain’t No Thang for The Gman

So the new Sunday Storm arrived with a bang yesterday and like all good value hounds the Gman was out and about skulking around the tables looking for his piece of the pie. I'll say now that the 210k for first would have been a pretty sweet slice to grab, but that was not to be. I did however manage to pull off a 7592nd finish out of the 113k+ runners. I beat 105,000 other players to get there and walked away reasonably frustrated with my $33. I know I shouldn't complain much as it was a pretty solid run to get there, and I was running about a 15-25bb stack for a lot of the tournament (I boosted up to 100bb's early and then went into a cruise control mode which may have been a mistake, but I have [More...]

Just Something Quick

Not sure if anyone cares, but I will throw it out there anyway. If you are interested in following me on Twitter look me up at @lespaulgmanTPE. I like to kick updates while I am playing at breaks for big stuff, so if you are interested, want to bounce some strategy back and forth or just yack feel free to look me up!

Still Sipping out of a Steamy Hot Cup of Run Bad

Well once again I drank from the fountain of poker misery. A host of tournaments played yesterday and a couple of min cashes and 2 deep runs all met with lost 60/40's. The upside is I know my game is solid. I am getting my money in good, just can't hold. Won a couple of step #3 tickets yesterday which made things better. Now I am jsut trying to decide if  I want to parlay those tickets into attempts for some SCOOP H buyin's sat's to try to make a few bucks more for the BR. Sorry for the short entry, I was planning on writing further, just got caught up and distracted. So anyway back to where I left off. Full Tilt has launched their WSOP package quest through the STEPs so I am looking into diversifying my challenge and [More...]

Close but no Cigar

Well last night was a good session with Wein. Things are looking really strong and solid in my game which is making me really happy. Got a healthy dose of run bad last night which made a bunch of the tourneys a bit stressful and tilty (which I need to work on a bit), but I did manage to take two deep again. Managed a 19th place finish in the Turbo 1r on AP and 20th in the $22 Deep Stack 6max on PokerStars. Things were going well in the tourneys, just lost a bunch of flips late trying to accumulate a very solid chip stack for a FT run, so I can't really complain much about the efforts. I managed a day off today from crappy weather in the Northeast so I am going to sit down and put [More...]

Weekend Wrapup and First Goal Report

Happy Monday TPE, I hope that the weekend treated everyone well. Had an up and down go at things for the weekend on my end. I had another top 60 run in the 35k on FTP friday night, a 29th in the Turbo 3k on FTP yesterday and a 49th in a 2r on AP yesterday which all felt really good. The Mini ME and Mini #44 were nothing but frustrating. I think I played solidly, but I just couldn't get anything into gear. I have adapted very nicely to a much more LAG style which I am very comfortable playing, but I am finding that when it doesn't get off the ground early it turns my tourneys into that 20bb grind for much of it and at some point you need to keep winning flips to survive and I [More...]

Shock the System

2011 has been a great year for me.  I've regularly been chopping out nice wins for myself and my backer for the entire year. However, long upswings can also lead to what I think can be an unhealthy feeling of comfort. When you are winning, it's easy to stop focusing on improving your game. It does not mean you are playing poorly, but you might be making more mistakes than you should be, which you are just not noticing because at the end of the day, you are winning. Today I was discussing a recently played hand with RonFezBuddy. I had remembered playing the hand poorly, but really did not realize just HOW poorly until I pulled up the Hand History to go over it with RFB. It was deep in the Fifty Fifty on Full Tilt Poker, so not [More...]

Good Night and Slight Tweak

First I'll start off by saying I am going to make a slight tweak to my new goal, instead of trying to Step to the WSOP through AP, I am going to use FTP and Stars as my battleground for this challenge. I spend 6 hours and only got into 3 Step 1's on AP, so I consider that a slow crawl through the dreggs, combining that with Cougars4444's advice decided a new direction was in order. I did fire up several on Stars last night and I managed to play 3 while other things were going on and I had tired of waiting around on AP and managed a 4th, 3rd and 6th. My net for the effort was one free Step 1 ticket and $1.50. Going to get into trying to play them hard over the weekend since [More...]

Feeling Inspired, New Goal

Good morning all! So Spring is almost here, temperatures are warming up and summer is just around the corner. What does that have to do with anything you ask? Well it is time for some goal adjustment I think. With the advent of the Multi Entry tournament I am no longer enamored with the Mini FTOPs series and my focus on attempting to win one has gone way down. I think the new formats are destructive for the game and are really driving the fish out of the events as it is too expensive for them to take a shot leading to much harder tournaments in general, something I am not sure I am all that enthusiastic about. I enjoy testing myself against the best, but I am not really sure that I am 100% ready to do this on [More...]
