In brief, I watched the 7 part serious by ben hayles on setting up and using hold em manager 2. very informative and well recommended.

my problem is, i find that keeping up with too many stats as a starter can be overwhelming while trying to pay attention to the table at the same time.

two questions, how do most cope with analyzing stats while playing

second, what are the best hud stats to have pre-set for starters , before expanding into the more indepth ones?

I haven’t seen the series but usually when there is a HUD setting up video the is an explanation to what the stats do/show.

I would cut down on tables, so if you usually play 12 tables, cut it down to 4 tables so you can pay more attention to the all these new stats available.
Also spending some time reviewing a couple of tournaments. Keep the focus at “Is there any HUD information I can use to play this hand in a different way?”

There is a lot of stats that can be used, how often does this player defend SB or BB, BTN opens, CO opens, EP opens, CBET frequency, how often player 3bets, double barrel, triple barrel, fold to turn bet after cbet on flop etc.

I would keep the focus on preflop stats and some postflop stats like CBET, fold to turn bet after cbet, call cbet, raise/checkraise cbet.

Use stats that quickly can define a players tendencies.

Do you guys think it’s better to do what was just suggested or to keep all the tables but start with a couple stats (VPIP/PFR) and slowly add new ones in one at a time as you get used to it?

I’m still new to HUDs (about 2 months now), but I’ve noticed one majorly important bit of information. Sample size is very important and a small sample can be very misleading.

–  As you get deeper in to a hand the sample sizes drop significantly. For example, VPIP tracks every hand but only a sub-set of those will include 3-bet and even less 4-bet. The same is true for c-bet, even less for c-bet turn, etc…

– VPIP/PFR has been really helpful even at small samples (50+ hands).  If someone is running 40/0 (loose-passive) over 50 hands and suddenly shoves 25BB, I tend to assume they have a monster since they have limped or called every hand they wanted to play and now they suddenly get aggressive…the same for someone running 7/0 (tight-passive). That said, it took me awhile to realize that these are preflop stats and even a passive preflop player can be aggressive post flop, for example, if they waited and waited and now they have a big starting hand and they flop good but the board is wet, they may not want to jeopardize the pot by slow-playing (I don’t condone this, I’m just dropping a theoretical person in to the point)

…so for the most part only PF and maybe c-bet type stats will gather enough of a sample to help when playing micro-stakes fields. I can’t remember the last time I had 200+ hands on someone. Even then I try to be careful about how much I use this information to color a decision. I’m also aware I’m interpreting stats and in that interpretation it can be easy to use them to support a thought rather than as raw input (to project tendencies on the raw numbers). I try to use the stats when I’m on the fence, to pick a side to drop down on.

Again, i don’t have a ton of experience with HUDs, and I know I can do more than I am, but these are some things I’ve noticed.

I use a pretty extensive HUD.

I used to belong to an SNG specific training site, and I took the layout from there. I have customised it over time. I am probably missing some vitals…maybe someone can point out any holes in my HUD?

VPIP and PFR are the two you’ll use most at first, and are probably the two most important stats to start out with.

I don’t think it is vital to start out with a small HUD and add stats as you go. I suppose it is one method. Personally I had a pretty extensive HUD from early on, and each session I would use a post-it note on my screen reminding me to concentrate on whichever stats I was trying to incorporate into my game…without effort those numbers can sit there for a time being unused.

Now, I am like a spider needling through each stat at each stage…I really do rely on my HUD now.

Whilst the HUD does take up alot of space over each player, you can fiddle with the opacity setting so it needn’t be intrusive visually.

I know each person has their own, but here’s mine. Feel free to copy it, so long as you place $1000 per stat into my Stars account. (Joke).

VPIP/PFR/CO rfi/ B rfi

SB limp/ SB steal

Tot steal/ Fold to steal

3bet vs steal/ Fold to 3bet

Cbet/ Fold2cbet

BB

Call Hero 3bet/ 4bet vs hero 3bet

The last two I added after studying Foucault’s range construction series. If V is more liable to 4bet or fold I 3bet a more polarised range, if V is prone to calling my 3bet I 3bet a de-polarised range. At least I think that’s the right way round! I’m giving the kids a bath as I type this!

I know that most of my stats focus on pre- flop situations. Such is the nature of SNG’s. I guess I should add “vs. Turn c-bet” stats…

Can anyone name any post-flop stats apart from “c-bet” and “vs. c-bet” they consider vital?

Thanks.

Always be careful when using specific post-flop stats. Turn c-bet and river c-bet occur less times then flop c-bet so you need bigger samples.

I’m no HUD wiz but despite going through all stats available I find that preflop tendencies and flop tendencies to be most important. I think postflop stats have a higher importance in cash games where more hands are played against the same players.

So unless you play highstakes and meet the same players over and over again I would keep my focus towards preflop and flop stats.

I would however spend some time setting up your popup HUD and there you can include stats that are weighted towards turn and river play. I just don’t think the stats need to be shown on your normal table HUD since they can easily give you wrong information or make you do a bad decision based on a very small sample.
