Hi all –

I am pretty terrible poker player who has played intermittently for the past ~10 years (for the most part once every couple of months with a few stretches in my past where I was a “reg”). When we do have home games, I typically crush my friends, but find myself in over my head in even the softest casino or underground games (I live in NYC so these are the easiest games to access). My style is button clicking aggressive, and I know that I am fairly spewy with bluffs, with little understanding of board texture, ranges etc. I’ve done a lot of light reading of poker books over the years, and have listened to the full Thinking Poker Podcast archives (which is why I am here), but have never sat down to actually study my game or really analyze hands that I play.

I just went ahead and purchased a 1-year subscription to TPE, and have set myself the goal of becoming a serious student of poker. I will be posting hands on here with at least semi-regularity and would love any advice and input that the community has. TBH this sub forum looks a little dead, but hopefully there is enough appetite around for some good discussion on what is probably some basic spots for most of you.

Best,
-JGB

Welcome!

You’re going to get a lot of value from this if you work at it – you’ve already started off on the right foot.

You have a pretty similar history to me in a couple of ways actually, which was pretty cool to read 🙂

Yes, the forums can be very slow at times but the upshot of that is you get a small number of very engaged users and some top level pros/coaches posting in the threads. It’s crazy +EV for those of us using them!

From the sounds of things you need to jump right on to Foucault’s (Andrew Brokos) ‘Getting off on the right foot’ series because it’s pretty likely that with your poker story you got into things thinking about poker the wrong way and have an approach that, while you might be able to crush your friends, is just not going to get you very far in any remotely serious game.

By the way, I play 90% live and I get a ton of value from the site. Most are online grinders from what I can tell but there is a LOT of value to be had by posting in the strategy forums, either your own hands or analysing others’ spots and seeing what others think about your responses.

And join in on the Skype chat group we have going. That’s often very active and you can do live sweats of other players and discuss spots in real time.

Good to have you on board!

Thanks BadAstronaut and Killingbird!!  I am excited to focus in and pick up my development as a player. I had a small epiphany in a really small stakes and short stacked $0.50/$1.00 home game over the weekend – I realized that my playstyle works in those games because I am the only one three-betting light and I am facing no resistance when I get out of line 3 betting and raising limpers (which way to many people were doing), rarely getting 3-4 bet and scooping a lot of dead money. Figuring out who will call you down light and who will fold to your aggression is all it takes in a game like that. This type of strategy doesn’t seem to fly against opponents who fight back, which of course means I need to adjust and become more balanced. I’ll collect some hands this week to analyze on my own and post here.

Welcome!

Have you considered teaching your home game how to counter your style for trial-by-fire? =p
