 Hello everyone,

My name is Ryan I have been playing Poker for 6 years now and the last 3 years serious.

I play MTT’s Mirco to High stakes and I play about 95% on 888 ,because I quite like the smaller fields and more fishes and donks in general.

This is nothing special whatsoever i know, but I have around 50k profit playing MTT’s I have final tabled a couple of Sunday Majors before and use to have a decent tournament win rate.

Over the years I have seen and had my fair share of downswings / bad beats ,but nothing like the brutal downswing I am experiencing right now.

2015 was the worst year I have ever had in my on-line poker career and my pokertracker graph is shocking as a result.

I got a job last year as a fencer due to the money I was losing and I think it effected my game even more as it was very physical and it made me really tired at night to grind so it limited my grinding sessions.

As from Dec 2015 i started playing fulltime again on 888 and up untill may this year 2016 my downswing continues.

Just to give you a small example of a couple of bad beats whats happening to me

last 10 in the $6 2500 r & a on 888 850$ for 1st place, i am chip leader with 305,000 last two tables 5 on each table i open a7s UTG, a newbie agro donk calls on his BB with a 280k stack flop = 2 s 2 h 3 s , BB donkey donk bets 37k into a 43k pot , i call turn is the 10 of spades I have the NUT flush, the bb donk jams 180k into 140k pot i snap call …

the donk had the 10 of hearts and the 6 of clubs …    river was 2 !!

I wont bore you with any more bad beat storys but this is happening to me constantly now and over a very long period of time and i end up cashing a MIN’ish amount and lost that playing more and more tournaments.

I have cut back in games play less tables and starting grinding micos and its happening to me again and again

Just yesterday on the 10th may 2016 i bubbled two Final tables again including the $55 5k Cyclone .

seems to be a pattern here..

I always keep on top of my poker game I constantly study the game I go over hand historys ,I watch top pros that I admire ,i chat with some other good regs on skpye i watch videos I still know i have my edge but I am actually mentual fkd now with all this bull shit i am getting.

I am at point now i am actually getting mentally fkd , I have never bubbled so many final tables and unreal suckouts deep in agmes so constantly like this in my life on 888 . I actually starting to think that the software there is rigged for newbie donk players. I have spoke to a few long term regs on there and they tend to agree with me.

Started playing on Stars i think its got all the best tournaments and the poker software is the best but the fiels are so huge , just recntly i last last 50 in the big $11 in a 6000 field its soul destorying..

ok rant over .. not sure what to do now (((

as someone who is in the middle of a fairly significant downswing myself, I feel you!

I wish I had some great advice, but instead I am simply here to let you know you are not the only one, and hopefully some other good advice will follow!

It is worth very little, but thank you for sharing. It helped me after a terrible run recently where no matter how many hands I win and no matter how nicely I chip up and run deep, eventually I flip and can’t seem to win no matter how bad V’s call seems (T4o called PF and cracked my KK during my last session, A4o called PF and out-drew my AKs, etc – I’d rather lose to AQ, as silly as that sounds). You’d think making it to 7th in a Stars Bounty Builder with ~6k runners would help, but it just seemed like another close call on a very rare run.

I know everything in the above paragraph is a sign of accumulated tilt that I have to get through. I’m trying to focus on mentally recalling the feeling (really, the feeling) of confidence when running deep seemed inevitable and FTs were just something that happened some decent percentage of the time.

Best wishes to us all!

I feel for you.  I’m in one now.  The funny thing for me is I don’t have a bunch of coolers or bad beats.  Some, of course but it’s been more like being ground down by a glacier than getting hit by a truck.

I review every hand I play and I study and try to ensure that I am 1) playing as well as I can/making the correct decisions and 2) improving.  I know that the decision making is what needs to be reviewed, not the end result.  While finding mistakes isn’t necessarily going to reverse the downswing, they are still mistakes that need to be fixed.

However, it is mentally very taxing to see people playing terribly but winning, particularly when it is at your expense.  It is also very difficult to maintain the proper mindset when you see that ranges, position, odds and everything we invest time and money to learn and understand doesn’t amount to a pile of fresh dog poop when variance closes her frosty fingers around your throat.

Another thing I look at is whether I am really in the right mood to play.  I don’t suffer from hard tilt but I get tired, bored and sometimes notice myself “knowing” I’m going to get sucked out on or fearing some random turn of events that will continue the downswing.  If I sense any of that I have to stop.  I won’t play for a day or two.

I had a chuckle as I used some of this time to view some videos here on TPE – I laughed in exasperated stupor watching someone make a deep run and thinking, “It certainly helps when you flop the nuts with AKs,” and “pretty easy to steal when they always fold”.  It actually eased my mind watching one of Bigdog’s live sweats where he bricked everything.  I felt a very warm and familiar feeling seeing nothing work or running into the top of someone’s range.  I would actually like to see more of that – it is helpful to understand that even the very best brick 85% of the time and it is helpful to see how they react when they get coolered, bad beat, etc.  They understand it’s part of the deal, usually say something like, “gg,” and move on.

Downswings are the worst.  Keep playing your A game and it will turn around.  (Am I telling you or me???)

I do like live sweat videos more than hand history reviews for this reason. More likely to see random action. Otherwise you can get the wrong idea as much as those who only watch poker on ESPN.

Ahh man that looked like a piss take but I am serious! Your posts often bewilder me…I often think that you are some kind of guru because I often don’t completely understand your posts, but I have the feeling they are genius level… Just way over my head!

But this last post is clear…and genius.
