Hello, this is an $11 buy in, I have a fairly tight image and have been 3bet 4 times by this villain in the 50 or so hands I’ve played against him and have folded every time. He hasn’t 3bet anyone else in that time and obviously I’m fed up with it but I can see that this is a bit spewy and not normally the sort of play I would make.

Seems like the main problem here is that you let Villain frustrate you instead of thinking, “OK, he’s doing something exploitable, how can I take advantage of that?” I think call > shove > tiny 4bet.

That’s definitely true, I didn’t expect him to just call and didn’t have a plan for when he did. Suppose I did call his 3bet though, what’s the best line with that flop? Just let it go and wait for a better spot?

Hmmm, I don’t mind the play, however in an $11 buy in tourney, maybe villain has played with you before and thinks you’re tight or something, or it’s probably just in your head, its happened to me before, I’ll be playing my game with 3/4 windows open and all of a sudden someone will moan that i “raise all their raises” and I think, I barely noticed you at all I’m just picking up hands.

The play itself if he is 3beting you light then he’s picked an odd spot to do it in with like 22bb, if he’s doing this light I feel like he’d just rip it in, or just call light instead. After he 3bets he’s got like 12bb behind, and theres about 12bb in the pot so he’s never folding to a 4bet here, he’s committed, but if you guys were deeper and he could fold to a 4bet, then I’d definitely make it bigger than 1k, because now hes got 3k chips and is looking at calling a raise of 1000 and theres a pot of like 3.8k, even if he has AQ vs AK he needs to win 26% for this call to be profitable and AQ vs AK is about 26% and wouldn’t you just shove AK here anyway? So he’s always calling I feel. Whereas if you just call the 3bet (which I think is like okay I feel for your table image you shouldn’t fold to 5 3bets in a row) there’s still room for you guys to play poker, where with this 4bet, villain has 3k behind with 5395 in the pot. He probably can’t fold any of his range on Aclub3club2diamond as there are so many Aces in his range and even the pocket pairs below an Ace might have to be thinking that youre on a draw of somekind.

Yeah this is just a bad flop for you and best you can do is fold. Even if he is too light he still has all of AK and AQ in his range and some of his light 3bets also include Ax. Plus you should have plenty of Ax in your calling range so you don’t really need to worry about defending when you whiff a flop like this one.

Ok thanks, that makes sense. I agree with both of you that I didn’t really think this through, didn’t consider stack sizes, got frustrated and put him in hoping he would fold rather than really thinking he would. All in all played it pretty badly!

There’s a few of my videos on here that you may find helpful on working with thought process in situations like this. The first is the recent Getting Off on the Right Foot. The other is my Bluffing series, though if you haven’t seen them, I think that Hand Reading and Getting Paid are good to watch before you watch Bluffing.

Awesome thanks for the advice. I’ve already watched the first 2 parts of your Getting off on the Right Foot series and they were really good! I’ll be sure to check out the bluffing ones as well afterwards.
