WSOP blues

Hi guys,

Sorry i haven’t been around at all. When I am away from my home I like to stay away as far as I can from a computer, so this is the first time I’m online since I got here. I will get to your questions as soon as I can, but it looks like you’ll have to wait until I get home later this week.

I’ve bricked five events since I’ve been here, and without going into too much detail, I got it in really good in most of them. I ended up bubbling the Venetian 1k in an interesting spot, and I think it is the only hand really worth discussing.

We get to day two of the venetian with less than 70 left and 54 paying. I win a few pots without much contest when I make in 4400 in LP at 1k/2k/300 with 87hh. I have about 85k and the big blind calls, having me covered. I played with him for a few hours on day one, and he was a relatively tight, older gentleman that hadn’t been out of line. However, he was still cognitive of having to re-raise his big hands pre, so I immediately discounted a huge hand.

The flop came down A-K-6 two hearts. The player checked and I bet 6200. Against most players I check behind, but I really thought I could take this down post-flop. Surprisingly, the player re-raises to 17k. It is a big raise, which throws me off, but after going through his range of hands here, his range seemed to be very heavy on AQ or AJ. I believe the player is very capable of making a fold here, so I end up shoving with fold equity and he snap calls with 66. It was a hand I was surprised to see. The turn is a heart, but the river pairs the board and I’m out the door.

I really think there are a few things worth discussing here. The first thing is that while I was trying to blow him off an ace here, I’m not sure if he check/raises AJ here. I think he probably check/calls. After thinking about it more, the only hand he’s check-raising here and folding is AQ. AK I immediately discounted from his range, but it is a slight possibility he could have that as well. After examining it closely, his hand is really often just 66 here.

The second thing to discuss is my post-flop play. I really think in retrospect I could check behind, as he will fire most turns with an ace in his hand or check if his hand didn’t improve on the flop. He will still fold TT-77 on the turn if I bet in most cases, so I think that was the optimal play. As played I definitely have fold equity with a shove, and at the time i thought his check/raising range was pretty big, but obviously after further analysis I know differently.

Other than that, just lots of bad beats not worth talking about. I feel really good about my play thus far, but it is really hard to play poker with these short stacks we get at WSOP. I am more looking forward to the $1580 at Venetian later in the week that I’ll be playing.

As for things other than poker, it has been fun having so many friends in one place. There is someone to hang with every day, and I really do enjoy everyone that I spend time with. I haven’t done anything too crazy since I’ve been here, but I’ve definitely had fun. I’ve played some ridiculous practical jokes, but I’ll wait a bit to post them since I am still here and don’t want to get into trouble until I’m gone ;)

I go back to NY on Saturday, with my dog having surgery on his knee on tuesday. I am really nervous about my pooch. The good thing is, he’ll have plenty of time to rest, which means I’ll have plenty of time on TPE.

Sorr for the rant! Going to go to bed now. GLGL to everyone here.

Nice blog post. How do you think the hand plays out if checked behind on the flop? I would assume he fires turn and you would raise. Do you think he would fold turn? And when the river pairs he would bet are you making the crying call even though you would probably crippled?

Hopefully you go deep in the events left to play and I hope all goes well for your pooch :)
