How often should I be folding to 3-bets?

Obviously this topic has a million variables, but generally speaking, what is a reasonable “fold to 3-bet%” in my HEM. I currently have 40%, and respected players are telling me this is loose/stationy. But I thought if I am folding 50% then it becomes profitable to pop my raises with any two cards.

In games against villains who rarely 3-bet light is it profitable to fold over half my range to 3-bets?

yeah this is such a difficult question to give an answer to, and especially in MTTs, where relying on stats might give you a completely wrong answer as sample sizes are really small and dynamics change constantly with changing stack sizes.

but, in general, it depends a lot on how often you are opening, and the tendencies of the 3bettor, and of course any history.

if you're opening a ton, then you have to be ready to start flatting some 3bets/making some 4bets–although this is of course only if your opponents are adjusting to your high open % by 3betting more often.

if you're on the nitty side, then as long as you don't think your opponents are picking on you then you can fold to more 3bets, although if you are getting picked on you need to start opening your 4betting range.

also, if you're not comfortable flatting 3bets/4betting, then another adjustment you can make to being 3bet a lot is to open less.

agree with Hagbard Celine and want to explain why 50% F to 3bet is ok:

The 50% would be a averaged number (is that the right english term?) and could result of folding 70-80% vs not adjusting and/or unexperienced players where you know there range clearly beats you.

And on the other side folding maybe only 35-40% to good players that are playing back at your frequent opening raises and get 4bet or flatted by you more often.

the combined number then isnt as stationey anymore but still not exploitable by good players with ATC.

I actually came into this thread expecting to write a lengthy response, but then hagbard nailed every point I was going to make… so yeah, just listen to him.

Thanks for making my job easy Hagbard,

Depending on the games you're playing you're probably not acquiring any history with specific players which means no one is exploiting you.

Calling 60% of 3-bets does seem very stationy and you should look at a lot of your 3 bet pots to see how many you won and what hands your villains were showing down. At lower buy ins a lot of light 3 betting just doesn't happen – you basically see SB or BB shoves over button opens and some times a button 3 bet over a HJ or CO open. Aside from that it's usually strong hands.

You also want to make sure that the times you do flat 3 bets are times when you're in position more than our of position – way more money is made in this game playing with initiative and in position.

Just now returning to this post. Tx so much guys, awesome responses. The personal adjustment I need to make here is clear to me now- play exactly like I have been against regs who 3 bet wide (perhaps 4-bet more), and bet/fold to noobs who 3-bet me unless implied odds are huge.
