Hey guys,
Been trying to grind the micro's but get a bit soul destroyed grinding a 4/5k runner field to bust in 160 for £20 or something, been trying to stick 300/400 on and grind up a roll.
However with my job I firstly wont be able to put in a shedload of volume, around 15 – 25 tournaments a week which is a downside as I'd like to play more, however the upside is that I have a source of income that allows me to prob deposit a lump sum and jump straight into playing $50-$100 tournaments. I dont want to do this as I feel i'd get eaten alive but is there a hapy medium around the $10 – $20 mark that will have usual fields of 1500 – 3k which in my mind seem managable compared to the huge micro fields?
I'm playing around 7pm UK time in the week and Sundays from 2pm onwards.
Also what would I need to deposit to play these comfortably, I do want to try and stick to BRM and see if i can consistently beat a level but the micro's are A) not holding my interest without the chance of a big score and the 5k fields are getting a bit intimidating and seem like too big a mountain to climb.
So cliffe notes – what level tourneys does the field thin a bit from the $2-$4 tourneys?

there are options to playing on stars if you want to avoid the huge fields – being in the uk maybe try out 888 or even party, they have some lower buyin tourneys that get between 100 and 500 runners.
secondly, i dont see anything wrong with depositing a larger amount and starting at say the $10-$20 tourneys, as long as you realise that it might cost you some money in the short term if you aren't quite ready for the games, although having said that, there isn't that big a difference between a $3 and a $20
my experience is that from the $33 and up is where you start to get some tougher competition.

Thanks for that Benny, after readign that I'd say that I'm prob an 8/9 on the risk scale (prob from being a sales manager so used to taking risks with money all day)
So my plan is to chuck about $1k on there and play all the $5 – $11 tourneys with shots at the $22 ones when they're running and also play the $1r and $3r and the $5 2r1a as well.
See you this time next week to ask for some backing cos i've done the lot in 3 sessions lol.

As you increase the stakes you will encounter better play, players will tend to take less risk at higher buyins. As Benny mentioned RFB's video is great to help you determine what buyins you should be playing. he fields tend to thin as you go up as well, but you could probably find smaller fields at smaller sites; plus it is always good to play around as well. I would not deposit a huge lump sum at any one place though. Before “Black Friday” I kept all my poker money in a seperate account and deposited as needed to the sites, this saved me from losing my whole bankroll when everything went to shit. Even though PS has a good reputation, you never know what the future holds.

i do not understand you talk about BRM – What you deposit on a site is not your bankroll.
Your bankroll in my mind is the money you are prepared to deposit. I mean I do not think/hope players with big BR have all their money on the client.
So if you have money to play at higher stakes in your normal account just make a excel sheet that tracks your progress and then start blasting away on the midstakes or where you feel comfortable. And if need deposit from your bank to the pokersite.
Hope you see what I mean.

This evolved into a BR discussion, but your original question was “If i can afford higher ABI, should i still start at the micros?”
In my opinion, the answer to that is no. The micros can be maddening. The field sizes are huge and the way people play increases variance. People do not get competent on average until $50+ imo. So if you can afford $10 abi, play $10 abi. You aren't missing out on any learning curve.
I agree with RFB. If you can afford a $10 ABI I'd go ahead and start there. You arent going to be missing out on much at all between $10 and $3 tourneys.

just use the micros to crush varience and sometimes they become the old session saver but for the most part people have zero clue where the fold button is and the frustration can actually be a step backwards in your progress.
Thanks for the replies guys, found the micro's soul destroying at times, just playing for 6 hours to cash for $12 wasn't my cup of tea. So I did play tournaments between $8 – $33 with upto $11r thrown in and now built up a $4k roll with the chop in the big $33 to start grinding properly after withdrawing what I had deposited intially.
Definately found it easier to get away with 3bet stealing and taking people of hands as well as putting people on hands and I think my aggresive game suits the level where players that are thinking about what I could be holidng rather than never folding as I couldnt adjust to playing against stations as I just wanted be aggresive lol.
Think i'll take this oppourtunity to say thanks to everyone for the advice as definately think adding things to my game that I have learnt here is very responsible for my recent decent results!

I tend to disagree here. Micro's are full of total fish!! People making mistake after mistake. Yes the big field sizes make variance a problem but when people are making mistake after mistake I go deep in low stakes every night.
This year I have made over £18,000 playing pretty much $1-10 games. There is a ton of money to be made here & isnt the fact that people cant fold a good thing for us.
I would much rather be playing against people who cant fold bottom pair than people who can lay down sets all day long because my edge is huge here.
I am hoping to move to up stakes next year & being backed now is going to help me achieve this. I will however see low stakes tournaments as very soft & will still want to play the better ones whilst mixing in some higher buy ins.
Anyway. Good luck at the tables whatever you play!

just curios how much volume you but in to get up to 18K at those stakes?
