Hey guys
I'm in a bit of a pickle
After my $30k score – which i physically received $25k of due to side bets and swapping action etc, i came home and assessed my situtation.
Paid bills, paid off credit cards and personal loan, went shopping (a lot!) bought a new lappie, taking time off work, eating out and living frivolously with my pregnant wife for the past few weeks.
Now back to reality, i have reassessed my poker roll, stakes and goals – which is what i need advice on.
I have an actual roll of approx 5k. On top of that there is also 6k left which i have set aside for a family holiday to rarotonga in february. After talking to my wife she has allowed me to use this 6k if i wish, to play poker with, provided that when february comes there is money for our trip (or worst case scenario, we put it on the credit card and pay it off like we would have anyway)
So straight away i have jumped back on stars and upped my stakes.
I was previously playing an ABI of $7-10 with a roll between 1.5 and 2k.
Playing now i have been aiming for an ABI of $30 and have been kind of struggling with the adjustment.
I'm not sure if it's variance, or if i'm playing bad or if the players are just a lot better and i need to adjust my game?
I've been playing FO's between $20 and $55 regularly and having a shot at 109 even! Regularly revieweing and discussing spots with my good poker friends as usual but dont seem to be progressing.
I really need some advice on what i should do given that i actually have a roll big enough to play higher but seem scared!
I guess ronfez input would be much apprecited b/c i know you have wife/family etc and also have a great article on bankroll management so hopefully could tell me what you'd do if you were in my shoes?
Would you play as if you had a 5k roll or the 11k roll and play the big boys hoping for massive scores?
And should i be expecting to do well in mid stakes as i have been in low stakes?

If you need that 6k there in february then I wouldn't count it as part of your roll. If your wife says “play with it but make sure we have it in feb” then it sounds a little too much like it needs to not be part of your roll. Since you do have a little wiggle room with it, i'd maybe act like my BR is 1k or 2k more as a weighted average.
So, I would stay with 5k-7k as your roll and keep an ABI of 200-300x with a few shots here and there. Go with like ABI $25. I don't think you should be dropping the $5s and $10s from your schedule. Those are probably very +EV and now you probably have a great mindset to play them since you won't be playing scared money in them.
Don't get discouraged about your results so far. Sample size is way to small to make any judgements. But, tbh, you kinda sound scared to play higher stakes and that's going to lead to -EV play. Keep crushing your stakes and move up slowly so that you won't be playing scared.

as always, RFB is spot on. i wouldn't be using that money at all for your roll, but i might be a little more aggressive in shot taking than you otherwise would have.
so i would be grinding your same schedule that you always were, but then maybe once every so often (per night, per week, whatever), just swap out your lowest buyin for a shot, i.e swap out a $5 for a $55. or even more conservatively, if you were playing a $22, just switch that out for a $55.

The bottom line is just because you can afford something does not mean you should play it if you are not a winner at it.
I'd also keep that 6k vacation money entirely segregated from poker and not touch it at all.
If anything you could play some bigger buy-in WCOOP events since there will be a lot of shot takers and satellite seat winners in those – infinitely softer than a regular $109 freezeout.

yeah i know 109 is just silly – who am i kidding lol
and you're all right about being scared to play higher despite having the roll to do so now.
I like the idea of staying with my 5-6k roll and taking medium shots but staying at my current stakes. This would easily allow me to play comfortable and when i do take my $55 shot i wont be that phased.
Also think its a great idea to swap my low buy in for the higher shot occasionally benny. Hopefully i get some run good soon.
Omg my wifes going in to labour as we speak! hah! man i'm happy i dont have to go through that pain….

the kids are asleep and shes still having contractions and encouraged me to play some poker! hah
made us a small profit for the small session i had and managed to turn my run bad around satting into WCOOP 32 on my 1st attempt for 30 bucks (which i probably cant play anyway)
still paining with contractions slowing now to every 30 mins or so
hope he comes out tonight and doesnt take days like i've heard with some peole before
ill be sure to put up some pics of the young fella

well he seems to not like the weather or something! he doesnt want to come out
Went to see a specialist yesterday and had a scan, hes moving and doing well and his estimated weight is 4.3kg which is exactly the same as our 1st baby and half a kg less than our 2nd who was 4.8kg (my poor wife)
the plan is just to keep on trucking along and return to the hospital once she is closer to giving birth (fingers crossed he dont come out in the car)
contractions are even further apart now so maybe he comes when the sun comes out..

All great advice above. I'd rather take shots at sattying into majors then playing a reg-infested 109 for sure any day of the week. Keep us updated on the baby!!

Born at 0442hrs on sep 14th 2011 is Tauke-James Knox (pronounced tow care knox – as my wife and i are of NZ maori descent)
Healthy 9p4oz young man
I'm so proud of my wife for pushing this giant out without any form of analgesia (pain relief) and not giving in to having an epidural.
We had a slight hiccup when he was half way out, he was having decelerations (meaning the rate his little heart was beating was dropping below 100 during each contraction). This is a sign of fetal distress and if it is prolonged, the birth would need to expedited most likely by caeserian section. Luckily, the specialist came in and said we could cope with waiting a little longer as the decelerations were of a certain type (early) and the trace wasn't too worrying. Not long after, the wifey said she felt like pushing!
Next thing i know, the midwife is throwing sterile gloves at me and telling me to get to the bottom of the bed!
Woweeee i see him coming down the path, and say out loud “omg he's got tonnes of hair!”
Lynne the midwife tells me “dont worry about that, just get your hands ready”
One last push and “Holy Moly!” his head is in my hands!
Following some gentle manoeuvering to get his shoulders out i was now the proud owner of a brand spanking new little TPE member! haha
Quiet little cry's from his expanding little lungs and the occasional tear and its time for photos!
Spent a couple of days at the birthing unit. This is a special private unit for new borns and the parents where there is 24 hour care from midwives, kind of like nice hotel rooms, with great food and sound proof walls. Excellent creation i say.
No we're back home and ready to start our new routine, hopefully a steady sustainable one.
Now i'm a father of three and am pretty dam happy today

Greetings all
I hate to be the bearer but sadly i have some not very good news on the newborn front
The day we arrived home from the birthing unit (3days old) my son was having a bottle feed and literally stopped breathing and went limp and blue….
I successfully stimulated him and he came back alert and breathing well following a period of 15 seconds or so…
I ended up talking to a friend of mine who is a paediatrician who suggested we keep a close eye on him, reassuring us that it is more than likely reflux of his milk into the airway and that it shouldn't be a long term problem. Also said that if it does happen again to go up to the hospital.
Well it did happen again. Exactly 24 hours later… my son went blue, stopped breathing and was limp…
Now i have seen a lot of medical problems, i have participated in just about every type of surgical operation; amputations, brain surgery, open heart surgery, lung removal… i have witnessed cardiac arrests, successfully resuscitated people, seen trauma, unsuccessfully resuscitated people and seen death. I have comforted family and everything else that comes with being a surgical and emergency doctor but nothing, absolutely nothing, comes close to seeing my own boy the way he was… lifeless and still
Again he came to after a short period of time and immediately we were in the emergency department.
Things were not very re-assuring early on and we were moved and are currently still in the Neonatal ICU
He has had many blood tests, xrays and is now receiving oxygen to keep his oxygen saturation levels high
Hes stable right now and is still under observation for the next few days with some more investigations on his heart to come.
We're keeping our fingers crossed and hoping hes going to be allright.
I will keep everyone updated when i get a chance and it would be great if we could have your wishes and thoughts for our fellow newborn TPE member

Channeling all of my thoughts/hopes/prayers for you and your family. So sorry that you are going through such a crisis and I hope that he improves quickly.
finally some good news for us
our man had a very good day yesterday – his breathing improved, his feeding improved and his reflux is also getting better
the good news for me is that his heart scan (echocardiogram) was normal!! From the time this event happened i was scared that he may have an underlying cardiac problem, and it wasnt until about 1 hour ago that those fears of mine were settled by the normal scan
so for now he has a lower requirement for oxygen and there seems to be no serious causes
apparently in some premature babies, they are not accustomed to swallowing from a bottle and dont have a great cough reflex.
so when they feed and have milk touch the back of their throat, rather than coughing they hold their breath and therefore have an apnoea.
good news is that they easil grow out of this and it seems like our son is doing just that.
In the few days we have been in the ICU he has become a whole lot better with bottle feeding which is exactly what we want
so great great news and thank you all for the support!!!!!

Howdy all
Well it has been a rough week since our young fella was born but we finally at home!
Its happy days now!
He passed all his tests and is well enough from a feeding and greathing perspective to be discharged.
It is such a huge relief to be in the comfort of our own home and he continues to do well.
My wife and i are both so very grateful for all of your support and thoughts. The comments you guys have made have all been very uplifting, encouraging and just what we need in stressful times.
She was pretty blown away by the amount of support we have from our TPE family and is very appreciative.
Time for us to settle back in at home and hopefully get back to grinding again!
