Side note: OP's question doesn't really belong in the GTO Forum. There isn't really a GTO way to approach late registration - just a lot of variables which need to be weighed up.

A major consideration with late regging is "how many people have already busted out of this tournament?" - if you late register after people have already busted, then that's effectively an overlay in the prize pool. Dead money that adds to your ROI.

If the amount added to your ROI from the dead money in the prize pool exceeds the decrease in your ROI that comes from missing the first few levels of the tournament, then late registration is usually a good idea. The decrease in your ROI from missing levels will depend on how deep your stack is when you buy in, and the added ROI from the dead money depends on how many people have already busted.

If you can find a tournament where you can buy in for a reasonable stack (say, 30bb) at a time when lots of people have already busted, that's a great time to register a tournament.

Additionally, you'll want to consider late registration when playing multi-day live events - playing 2-3hrs less poker on the first day could leave you a lot fresher coming into day 2 if you make it. This is a significant factor.

Hey Foucault and thanks for the reply,

Yes true I get what are you saying, I am playing micros up to 4$ so I think my edge on short stack play is better than the avg micro player, however still a lot to improve. But I get your point !

Thanks for the help.

I think you need to be more clear about what you mean by "OK". Entering a tournament means trading cash for tournament chips. Are those chips worth less two hours into the tournament than they were at the start? Perhaps - as you say, you've missed out on some opportunities to exploit weaker players. Then again, if you are a poor deep stacked player, then perhaps you've actually missed out on opportunities to *get* exploited.

Are the chips worth more than what you're paying for them? And if so, is whatever edge you're "buying" the most +EV use of your time? Those are the real questions to ask yourself, and they are situational. How big will your edge be going forwards? (Edges can actually be quite large when you are short stacked, so don't assume that that by itself means you can't profitably re-enter). Is late registering trading off with some other opportunity? What is that opportunity worth to you?

Hello guys,

I would like to ask you the below :

In which stack depth would you keep re-entry to a tournament ? Let's say you eliminate 1 minute before late reg close, so you get 10bbs stack would you still re-entry ?

Same for re-buys but I know its a bit different due to the add-on, plus I know that is always profitable to play re-buys till the add on period close otherwise better no play them.

The above Q's are kind similar to one thing I was not sure about late registration. Is it ok to late reg? For sure playing from level 1 is better due to the fish and the opportunities you have to accumulate a big stack vs weaker opponents.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Panos
