go with quad core, they are the newest processors, so they will last longer (with regards to everything being more resource hungry in the long term)

prolly wont make a difference in terms of grinding, but there isn't much of a price difference - dont buy the top of the range quad core, but something mid range would be fine

I appreciate the advice guys. I wasn't even aware that you could still get XP Pro on a new machine. I was just trying to get an idea of the mimimum requirements. I am going to go ahead and shell out the $$ for a new machine. I forgot to mention that I will also be using the machine for some audio/video and photo editing, as I am adding wildlife video and photography to my ever growing list of occupations. I know that probably changes the equation. I want to go ahead and get a system that I will be able to use for the next few years and have the flexibility to do whatever arises I guess. I also have 2 laptops that combined have about 220GB free storage in their D: drives.

If I were you I would go to a second hand computer store and pick up a CPU,Monitor,Keyboard,LCD for a few hundred bucks and save your $$$. There is no need to have the top of the line, super fast machine with all the bells and whistles if you are just going to be doing school related stuff (writing papers, research online, email, music / movie downloading etc and poker)

I would also make sure that Windows XP is installed if you are going the Windoze route. Whatever machine you get, just make sure you max out the RAM (memory) so your computer will perform as it's best. Most machines these days can take 4GB of memory.

I am about to purchase a new desktop. The machine will be used for 50% poker and 50% school/personal. I not super knowlegable about computers so I am looking for some insight on what specifications I should be looking for in both the computer and the monitor. My budget is going to be about 750 to 1000 dollar, 1000 dollars being the absolute ceiling. Brand loyalty is not an issue. I just want to try to get the most bang for the buck.
