I know, I am not a pro…but maybe that will make this thread interesting  smile

As my 2,000th approaches I'm finding myself more stoked than ever about our community here at TPE.  I figured a thread like this would be a cool way to celebrate 2,000 posts!  So I'll start by saying thank you to all of our members for making this place what it is!!  You guys are amazing and I'm happy to have gotten to know (and even meet) many of you.

With that, you can ask me anything in this thread and I'll do my best to answer.  Ask me questions about poker, life, my music business days, starting and operating TPE, etc. Fire Away!

Coke or Pepsi?

Is it still possible to play online MTTs for a living if you are not at the top 10-20?

Will the San Diego Chargers ever win a Suberbowl?

Top 3 TV shows?

Any food tips for MTT grinders? Do you prepare food before each session (if so, what kind of food?) or do you run into the kitchen to grab a bite at breaks?

Will there be any mixed game MTT vids / pros coming up on TPE? There have been 2 or 3 theory PLO vids and 1 or 2 HORSE videos but that is about it..

Mt. Dew!  But Coke if i have to choose one.

For sure.  But it obviously depends on your lifestyle.  If you are single and have low living expenses you don't need to make a ton to survive.

Will the San Diego Chargers ever win a Suberbowl?

Yes, but not soon Im afraid.  Probably before the Dolphins though.  cry

Top 3 TV shows?

Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire (I do like shows without sex and violence though, i promise)

Any food tips for MTT grinders? Do you prepare food before each session (if so, what kind of food?) or do you run into the kitchen to grab a bite at breaks?

I dont prepare much and I eat terribly.  I am fortunate though to have a really supportive wife who will bring me healthy meals and snacks while I play.  My wife and son usually come to my poker office on Sunday for dinner and we eat together, although they are very patient with the fact that I pay almost not attention to them.

Will there be any mixed game MTT vids / pros coming up on TPE? There have been 2 or 3 theory PLO vids and 1 or 2 HORSE videos but that is about it..

You should start to see more non-holdem vids in the future. It is something we definitely want to expand more in to, but also are aware that the majority of our members play NLHE tournaments.  But like I said, you should definitely start seeing more of this if all goes as planned!

I think we can definitely do that.  We are about to add patches and card protectors to the store.  I'll be sure that we get chips up as well as we still have some left from the WSOP.  Would selling them in sets of 10 be cool?  Then you can just buy as many as you want.  They are all one color so not really good for actually playing with…but are fun to shuffle while grinding online  🙂

ok, marry is easy at least.  I would Marry TTwist.  He's happily married and a good dad, so at least it would be a positive relationship.

Now it gets tough.  part of me says F marc because I've always had a “littler person” fetish.  But I've seen Cougars drunk and he can be dreamy when he wants to be.  However, I have also heard him sing. And trust me, if you have ever heard him sing you would want to kill him too.

So I would kill Cougars.  And I guess that leaves me with F'ing Marc.  And considering we will be living together all summer, it's not out of the question…

And I would wear this shirt:

What did you do in the music business?

are you still involved?

How do you handle family balance?    do you play every Sunday or do you kind of set up a schedule?  are you trying to complement your income with grinding or is it a serious hobby?

How did you and Diego meet?  was it love at first sight wink?

How do you handle downswings?  How does your wife handle downswings?

I was at EMI Music for 8 years or so and was the head of Artist Development.  Basically means we did marketing for new artists.  So my department pretty much only worked artists until they had sold about 100,000 copies of their record.  Some exceptions to the rule but that was basically it.  Then I went to an indie label called Tooth and Nail Records where I was Director of Sales and Marketing…basically my job was to get records in to stores and make sure that they sold.  So I developed advertising plans, marketing plans, made presentations to buyers, worked with our distributor, booked print ads, etc

are you still involved?

Somewhat recently I did some consulting for a small label based out of here in NC…but with that exception I am completely out of the biz.

How do you handle family balance?    do you play every Sunday or do you kind of set up a schedule?  are you trying to complement your income with grinding or is it a serious hobby?

I would say that it is somewhere between a hobby and a second income for me.  I love it and I try very hard to get better at it…but if I never had a winning session again it would not kill me.  At least not financially, although I might throw myself out a window.  lol.  I don't play every Sunday, but i would say 3 out of 4 Sundays.  I usually start around 3 or 4 and play until 1 or 2 am.  I've tried to get better about the family balance.  Especially now that TPE takes up more of my time and, specifically, allows me to visit Vegas for 2 months every year.  Thats already a big % of the time that I am gone from home, so I try not to add to that too much more.  Mostly I accomplish that by playing at night.  That way I am playing while they are sleeping as opposed to when they would like to be doing something together as a family.

How did you and Diego meet?  was it love at first sight wink?

haha.  I posted a thread on 2+2 (which I would actually link to here, but 2+2 is down) asking for some advice.  in that thread i have a bit of background about myself, and Diego responded (and perhaps even PMd) and said “hey man, we are both very much in the same situation.  Here is my advice and lets talk sometime”.  We then were part of a group of people who started our own private MTT strategy forum.  It was basically an invite only, private alternative to 2+2.  We got to be friends primarily on that forum.  Then we planned a few group trips to AC and we met in person there and I guess solidified our friendship.  Then i guess it was 2.5 – 3 years ago that we started talking about starting a poker business together…and here we are!

How do you handle downswings?  How does your wife handle downswings?

I accepted variance a long, long time ago.  Not saying it does not still bother me a bit, but you'll almost never hear me complain about it.  I just know that it is part of the game and then it should eventually correct itself.  I do still take breaks sometimes when I am running bad, and Im fortunate to have good people to talk poker with.  I also still try to watch lots of TPE vids and read the forums because it helps me remind myself that I am still trying to get better every day.  Im pretty lucky in that my wife for the most part almost never asks about poker money.  That is primarily because I never ask for “family money” to play poker with.  I manage to pay for my poker trips, tournaments, etc without tapping in to our life roll, so as long as that is the case, I dont think she cares too much if I am winning or losing.

This is tough, so im gonna pik a couple.  I would say any bigdog live sweat because I love them all.  Dude is literally a poker genius.  BourbonFTW's aggression theory video is up there.  and also gonna say betudontbets premier series…think you guys are gonna love this guy!

What is your most memorable aha! moment?

bigdog on 3 bet shoves.  before that i did not really think about finding resteal spots.  i thought about finding 10 bbs open sbove spots.  now i start looing for 3 bet shove spots instead.

Most memorable poker hand (win or lose)?

Three of them.  one is the A9 vs A5 hand vs. Sorel Mizzi when I won the step six on stars.  Which is a SITTM video that you can find on the site.  The second was when i was deep in the Stars $5 million GTD (a special Sunday million).  I had a big stack in the money and i got AA in the BB.  i said “man i hope i get action here”.  UT +1 shoves like 26 BBs.  I of course call and lose to his ATcc.  Crippled and end up busting shortly later.  so much $$ equity in that hand.  Finally, fist WSOP event i ever played.  a $1500 event.  flew all the way to vegas for one event.  grinded short stack for a long time and then finally worked up to about a 9K stack at 200/400.  This was back when you started with 3K.  Active UTG guy opens to 1600.  UTG flats.  im in MP wth AKs and I shove 9500ish.  UTG reships.  flatter folds.  UTG has AQ.  If I can win this hand i coast to day 2.  flop is AQQ.  Turn Q.  Good game.  I snap went to the airport and flew home.  It was hearbreaking under the circumstances.

Have you read any poker books?

pretty much all of them.  was a poker book junkie before i discovered training sites.  early on harrington on holdem was great.  Theory of Poker, etc…all the clasics.

Lately i dont read a ton of books but do like the Rizen, Apestyles, PJ books and the Elky book is pretty darn good as well.

Can you organize a pro(s) to play in our Aussie Home Game on stars? Tuesdays 19:30 ACST… We’ll put a 10 point bounty on their head(s). We’re into game 7 of a 13 game cycle and have amassed $680 in the kitty… I’ve already asked Aussie Brendoor, but he’s too busy, surely one of your other pros would be keen to humor some regular, crushing, members!!! Maybe the pro can record the session! “Sticking it to the Members”…

I have some questions i`d like to ask

1 – I have about 3k bankroll, and i do know that i`ve been good on microstakes games, but the variance is SUPER high.

Do u recomend a move up with that bankroll? to 11$~5.5r ? (I was planning to move up when i get some 5K, but maybe i`m waiting a litle too long, and i pretty excited to move up and start some new challanges, and u ok would give me some extra motivation.

2 – Also i would like to know if u have in the past, a serious problem with latestages? final tables … if u get too nervous ?

I totally missed a lot of good spots on my carreer, but i working on it pretty hard to not let myself thinking about the first prize money, when still have 9 players on the table.

Thanks, (sorry about the bad english, brazilian lol, i`m still working on it)

With a 3K bankroll I think you could for sure play $11 freezouts and $3r with the random $5r thrown in.  Mix in some 180s to reduce variance.  Im a bit of a bankroll nit so I like to keep my average buyin at about 300 BIs but some would argue 200 is totally fine.

I used to have an issue where I tended to get short leading in tot he money bubble and the FT bubble, so i tended to go in to FTs as 6-9th place as opposed to top 5.  It was not so much being nervous as much as it was just a general nittiness.  I think I have broken that habit, although with Merge tournaments you kind of just get used tobeing relatively short stacked ITM because everyone is.  You definitely want to try and play for those top 3 spots, because there is where all the money is.  You'ff find yourself busting 10-18 more often, but you will also find that when you do make the FT you are not in 9th place.

Good question.  We made some tough decisions.  We had to really change our business model to a degree.  So we lost some of our US based pros and we started focusing on international pros…hence the arrival of people like Mike Leah, Ben Warrington, etc.  From a marketing and advertising standpoint we also started to focus more on those markets. And finally, we stayed commited.  I know I speak for all of us here that Black Friday just made us that much more commited to making TPE amazing.  We did lose a good number of members to Black Friday, but we've gained those numbers all back and we could not be more greatful.

Working at Tooth and Nail was the second best job I have ever had (next to TPE of course!)  I was not a huge TFK fan, although I was quite good friends with their singer for a while and even roomed with them for a while in Seattle.  But they have some amazing bands.  I think Underoath is incredible.  mewithoutYou and As Cities Burn are both great, great bands that many people have never heard of.  T&N was just a great small label where everyone was super passionate about music.  And that is what i dig, working at a place and with people who are passionate about what they do.

A question:

What kind of aprouch u use when facing 3-4 oponents, who they`re completely retardeds, i mean, they play every single hand on the small/big blind, calling 3bets with complete garbage?
I was the bublee of the FT on a 4max regular tournament in pokerstars today, and my stack was pretty decent, almost 70 bigs blind 5/10k i dont know the antes, and i was moved to this table with 3 retards, and i started to loose pretty much every single hand, especially on the river, when they make flushs/straighs, hits a higher pair or just showdown some things like this: called two barrels with 33s.  I check the river on a board A5QT4 and he shows 33s (the very first hand i played on the table, i have K9suited and i a hit a flushdraw on the turn but he called anyway.

What do u do? do u swich off the aggro mode and start to play passively? or just keep it as aggro as u can? hoping to get it in good against those guys?

Again, sorry about the english, hope u get the point.

How do you manage your bankroll? After Black Friday I guess you don't have all your money online (I lost 2/3 of my roll this way lol). Is there a % you keep online? Do you keep the rest in a seperate bank account? Or in your normal – every day life – account and you just keep books about your poker bankroll?

The problem I have is that I treat money as poker-money if it is on some online site. As soon as I cash out the money becomes “more serious” since it feels real all of a sudden. So it isn't poker money anymore and I'm hesitant to redeposit it during a bad run online. I've thought about opening a seperate bank account just for poker money but I also want to avoid all the fees for transfering money, currency conversion etc. .. I'm curious how the pros do it.

How many tables do you play?

i used to take the apporach of raising bigger to get these guys out of the hand.  But now I just play my regular game.  If they want to put money in the pot, awesome.  And by keeping your preflop raises smaller, your cbets get to be smaller meaning you have less invested if you do have to give up on a pot because more than one of these guys go crazy.  So I would not say that I swith to aggro or passive, I just keep playing my game…and then kick things when they bad beat me!  smile

I usually play 4-8 tables.  Used to play more (probably too many) back in the day, but its hard to get 12-15 going just on Merge.  Only time I really get more than that going is when i am not busting anything.  Which is always a nice problem to have.

I don't keep much money online, I figure I can just redeposit whenever I want.  So i keep it pretty low.  The rest of my roll I actually keep in cash in a secret spot.  lol.  sounds silly, but it's what i do.  im oldschool!  This way it's never in my bank account and my wife never feels like Im taking money out.  Any money that goes in the bank, stays in the bank for bills, etc.  Everything I need for poker is in that wad of cash.  I have not deposited in some time, but when i do I just put in what i need and wend it right away.

By the way, when i say deposit, I dont really mean deposit. What i really mean is give someone cash (or paypal or wahtever) in return for a transfer.  That way i too avoid the fees and sometimes even get more money for my dollar through the 2+2 marketplace or some other forum like that.

i used to take the apporach of raising bigger to get these guys out of the hand.  But now I just play my regular game.  If they want to put money in the pot, awesome.  And by keeping your preflop raises smaller, your cbets get to be smaller meaning you have less invested if you do have to give up on a pot because more than one of these guys go crazy.  So I would not say that I swith to aggro or passive, I just keep playing my game…and then kick things when they bad beat me!  smile

Proud of you.

I think it is fine in any game.  You'll pretty much ALWAYS find me wearing a hood because I am always freezing in the poker room.  I have a sweatshirt on right now and it is probably 70 degrees out.  Im always cold.  As for sunglasses, I do not wear them as much now as I used to.  I used to like them not so much to hide my eyes, but so that I could stare at people without feeling weird.  lol

However, I've gotten used to stearing at people so it does not really bother me anymore.  cool

ok, marry is easy at least.

I've been debating if I wanted to answer this.  Not like it is some crazy top secret info…but I know we have competitors as members so I want to be sensitive to that.  So I will just say that the number is 4 digits and leave it at that  smile  I will also say that it is growing quite fast as of late!

another question

what are your goals in poker? do you have the dream of playing full time (after regulation in the US obv) or will it always be a hobby/second job?

have those goals changed over time, especially with BF?

I've flirted with the idea, but I've always had a job that I was really passionate about.  Obviously that used to be music and now I'm fortunate to be able to do TPE full time.  So it is hard to find the time to get really good and to put in the volume I would need to.  I think it will always be a hobby/second job for me but I'm not completely closed to it depending on what happens with regulation.  So right now my goals are more business oriented and less playing oriented, although I really would like to get a good live score under my belt.  I had the near miss last year finishing 10th in that Venetian Deepstack $550, so hopefully this summer will finally be my chance!

it is definitely pretty awesome that you can play the world series every year whilst working full time, that would be my perfect scenario 😀

Killingbird,
I just received my TPE patches that I ordered off the site in the mail, so I go could to some TPE promoting at my local LA casinos and WSOP. I wanted to put them on a hat, hoodie, and tshirt-any chance you know if these are the iron-on patches or do I need to hit the seamstress and have them sewn on? BTW, TPE is the nizzles-i’ve learned more in a few months on this site than I did in 7 years without instruction-thanks again!

I think that is Hickory…but its not ALL that far from here. Cary is mostly famous for two things. Being ranked the #1 city in America to move to a few years ago. And home of the Research Triangle. Which is basically a huge land development that they used to attract tons of tech and pharma companies. So I am surrounded by a lot of people who work in those industries…particularly Cisco and IBM for some reason.

First time I have come a crossed this thread, but I have been horribly out of the loop. How are your exploits as a home brewer progressing?

I’ve always been curious about how training sites like TPE recruit their pros. Do you target people who post good strat advice in forums? Do you find out who’s crushing the games and approach a large number of people so that you can have your pick of the ones who are interested? Or does it mostly come from people you know personally?

What are the three main qualities you look for in a TPE pro? Is ‘results’ at the top of the list?

Going fairly well, although I wish i did more of it. My first was an IPA that came out OK but not really hoppy enough. Then I did two together with my dad. One was a Belgian that came out quite good and the second was a Double IPA that I am bringing to Vegas with me…so we’ll have to let the other TPE pros weigh in on just how good that one came out 🙂
