The MTT Grind

Well, I've been back from the World Series of Poker for about a month now and I have had plenty of time to make up for lost time with the family and take care of loose ends that were left with me being gone for nearly 2 months. I've done enough laying around on the beach which can only mean one thing…back to the MTT grind! I pretty much got back in to the groove last week and put in 3 solid sessions, including my first Sunday in a while.  While I have not had that big score yet, I've had a few wins and other final tables in smaller buy in tournaments.  While that does not help pay the bills, it does remind me that I can still play and gets me motivated to crush again.  I feel like I [More...]

Shit I’ve Learned Part 1

I'll probably end up doing a couple different blogs like this – the aim is to write down some things I've picked up along the way whether it's from a training video, article, or something I figured out on my own.  1. VPIP, PFR, and 3 Bet Stats can be dangerous if you don't know how to read them. These stats give you a foundation with which to build strategy but if you're only glancing at some HUD stats and making decisions solely based on that you might find out that you're either having break even or losing results.  Here's a good example.  Villain 1: 20/18/8.5 Villain 2; 36/28/8.5 Each of these villains are going to have a very different 3 betting range from each other. One is likely to be polarized and the other is de-polarized. Also, you need [More...]

The Trials of Playing Live

Sometimes you do it all right and it doesn't work out. That was last night. Let me start off by saying that last night wasn't all bad, actually quite the contrary, it was rather excellent. I met up with Wein and we had dinner. It was great to see him again and catch up. He is a great guy if you have never talked with him. Quite a bit more knowledgeable than his years, plus he's pretty damn funny. That was the fun part. We decided to go and play a little 1-2 PLO live for fun. Well it was sort of fun. Okay, maybe not totally true, it was quite enjoyable. I ended up stacking a girl two to my left when I picked up 3 different straight draws on the flop and she hit a set. We ended [More...]

A Little Live Action

I thought I would take a few minutes and throw out a quick little post seeing as I am going to have a poker related next couple of evenings. I have a short little business trip down to Delaware which puts me in convienent proximity to the Delaware Park Casino (and even more importantly the Poker Room). I encouraged to see how my session goes this trip as I am taking some positive steps to make sure body and mind are ready for action. I have spent the last several days eating better (lots of slow carbs, lean protein) and staying very well hydrated. I am feeling more alert and sharper and I am hoping that translates into discipline and pots won. I am going to be playing some tonight so here's to hoping that preperation works out. As for [More...]

The Keys to the Kingdom

I thought I would share today something that I have been experimenting with for quite some time and believe have found a noticeable improvement because of: 1. Solid Fundamentals + Good Practice Habits + Frequent Studying + Time at the Tables = Good Poker 2. Good Poker + Excercise + Hydration + Well Balanced Meals + Sleep/Rest = Great Poker There you go, the keys to the kingdom. I have been chronicalling my performance at the tables with improved fitness (goals that my wife gave me) and have actually noticed a substantial change for the better in my play. Taking the time to excercise has allowed me to come into sessions destressed and more relaxed, combine that with good sleep schedule and I have been more alert and attentive while playing. Adding in good nutrition and hydration and I have really noticed that my mind [More...]

Blog #100…Hooray Me!

Okay so first things first, I was going to do this yesterday, but I am in the process of packing up to move in the next couple of weeks so I got tied up there, my apologies. But here it is, post #100! As promised since we looked back in #99, we are going to look forward in #100. So what is in store for the Gman this year. Well, first as I said in the last post I think that my game has come a long way. The time I have spent with coaches and friends and the amount of discussion I have had has really helped grow my mind and I am finding that I am seeing the game a lot clearer now. Along those lines I have started to work on diversifying my game. I particulary took [More...]
