would just like to clarify what i meant on that 99s vs AQ hand…calling w/ 99 compared to 10s is very different just bc of how many more hands of your opponents range you dominate when they are shoving 15bbs from MP like that (such as A10, K10, Q10 suited etc)…w/ 99 your almost guessing, and then if you’re right, at best, racing. In my opinion bc we are getting closer to the money bubble i don’t think that people are shoving light enough in that spot in order to make this a profitable call. Just bc of the magnitude of this tournament I feel people were overall playing a lot tighter when it came to their tourney life. Although i won the hand I honestly don’t like that call given the reasons i stated above.

What do you guys think??…I’m interested in some other points of view on this thought

I’m not sure I even get that far because of the price that you’re getting here. You only need 38.8% equity for this to be a breakeven call and if he’s shoving AT, KT, and QT suited then this is a fist-pump, jump-out-of-the-chair and mash-the-call-button-with-your-nutsack call. His range has to be TT+, AQs+, KQs and AQo for this to be a bad call, at least in terms of straight up equity. If he’s a couple BB deeper and the equities are closer then I think the call starts to look more marginal (and the jump from 99 to TT will represent about +3% equity vs his range) and folding wouldn’t be a mistake, although in that instance raising a little smaller pre might be better?

Also, I really liked this installment – definitely the best one of the series so far. You did a really thorough job on your explanations and very adeptly conveyed your thought process, with the extra bonus of analyzing interesting hands you weren’t involved in.

it is not a matter of straight up equity though. its a call in a vacuum. but when we factor in our stack and that its around the bubble, this could be high variance spot to pass. we do this because folding gives us more chances to chip up easily playing small ball….while calling and losing will most likely prohibit us from chipping up easily since we then will be forced to get into higher variance situations. obviously winning gives the ability to small ball it up around the bubble with pretty much ATC and can apply max pressure. but i think if you run this in ICMIZER, it is close. but even ICIMIZER doesnt factor in our ability for future easy chip ups with our current stack based on gameflow/etc.

I def understand your point and it’s a valid one in terms of specific equity. I just tend to usually not make calls based on what those close percentages tell you. In my opinion peoples ranges change due to a variety of things such as tilt, mood, bankroll, inexperience, fear of busting etc. so no matter if the numbers tell you its “profitable” to call I don’t agree that you should be doing so every time. It’s more or less just an instinct and pure gameflow decision.

thanks man i appreciate that! i’m getting better turning my thought process into a great video just need some more practice. I think recording live sweats will suit my style well.

I think this hand is a good illustration of the difference between “mathy” players and feel players. I can understand the value of each. This is not a call that you are forced to make per se, you can fold without significant damage to your stack, and can continue with small ball. Given game flow concepts, once you have a decent stack it is much more important to preserve chips than accumulate more because gaining chips here doesn’t help as much as losing them hurts. However, for me, I call. I’m not folding 99 given that I only need roughly 40% equity. I believe A-9, possibly K-9, and even 10-9 are in my opponent’s range here btw.

heya Corey, your J7 call, getting great odds, are you looking to flop a 2 pair/straight possibility before you get involved?

  10. MJ23STYLEz

ya gotta tell me where in the video that takes place. takes wayyy to long to search through..but yea in general if I call with a hand like that with great odds then that’s obv what I’m looking to hit silly! If I could pick I’d wanna just flop the nuts but that’s in a perfect world. Def won’t ever be stacking off if I hit top pair but overall in spots like these I just re evaluate as the hand goes on. EVERY HAND IS UNIQUE
