Wondering if my line was weird here:

1/2 Live cash, had been at the table for about 1/2 hour, full ring, have $220 stack. Guy/villian on my left was mid 40s,  clearly the “table captain,” knew the staff, talked a lot, had about $800 stack. Seemed active in a lot of pots.

UTG/villain straddles to $5. UTG +1 makes it $10 to go. we get 5 callers around the table, and I call in BB w 88. UTG calls. Pot $70.

(At this point I’m thinking pretty clear set-mine, there’s almost enough in the pot to justify it and implied there definitely is. Don’t see any point in raising.)

Flop comes down 774 rainbow. SB checks and now I’m thinking, there’s a good chance I have the best hand here. And if I check it could likely get checked around, and 7-way, there’s few turns that won’t hurt me. I figure I have a decent chance at nabbing this pot from a passive table, and bet $45. I know It kinda says “I have an overpair” but I’m ok with that. I do. Anyway, UTG calls right away. everyone else folds. Pot $160. I have $165 behind.

I don’t understand straddles, I’m not a live or cash reg. I just know they lower my SPR. And I read somewhere once that people straddle when they think the blind players are not good. So I think this guy thinks I’m fishy. (maybe I am.) Whatever.

Turn comes 9r.

???

I guess this might be more of live read situation but what would the play be here. Was my flop bet too donkish?

Calling pre is OK, but there’s definitely some point to raising – there’s a ton of money in the pot that you could win immediately, and your hand will even have OK equity against calling ranges. Folding would be criminal.

You shouldn’t bet just to “take it down”. You need to have a clear idea of what you are trying to make your opponents fold and what price is required to do that. In a 7-way pot, you just have to accept that you aren’t always going to be able to protect your hand, and you aren’t going to win the pot often. I think your options here are bet much smaller (~$25) or check. As played, you’re often drawing to two outs on the turn, and I think you have to check-fold. You bet big into 6 people on the flop, and V called anyway. What could he do that with that you’re ahead of?

Interesting. Didn’t really think of raising pre. And in hindsight I do think a flop check might have been better. I could get some info and maybe even c/r if I saw some weakness? I did have an idea of what I wanted opponents to fold: unpaired hands and hands without a 7. In the moment I was thinking I would have heard from TT or even 99 or better preflop most likely. And only 2 7’s out there. The UTG was just the straddler and the UTG raise from $5 to $10 was just weird and doesn’t really seem strong. But UTG+1 was the only guy I thought might have an overpair to mine really. Maybe my thinking is flawed.

I was def. surprised when UTG called. He was pretty active “table captain guy” and had a big stack, and I was thinking what are the odds he actually lucked into a 7 or a big pair in his straddle, never great.

The rest of the hand is not so important. I’m more confused about my play up to turn.

As played, the 9 turn came. I had about a pot size bet left and figured that the odds of him floating me were decent. I jammed $165 into $170. I know this is kind of a live read, but it is a real question: what would he call my flop bet with?? I really couldn’t get my head on his range. No draws on board. Did he just get lucky in the straddle with a 7 or big pair? Seemed more likely to me he was fighting for his straddle pot.

In any case, he called immediately, and tabled A9o. River was a blank and I was stacked. Runout not so important to me as perhaps the mistakes I might have made earlier in the hand. Opinions appreciated.

Thx –

Oops $165 into $160 jam. need approx 50% fold to profit. I guess I should really break down his flop call range more specifically. But in game I’m not so fast at that. Just figured, not a lot of nut hands here, but def. some floaty ones with his profile (AQo,AJ,KQ,QJ,QTs,KTs,AT,56,etc.. maybe more)
