Hey, what’s up everyone! My name is Steve and I joined TPE a few days ago. This is the first poker strategy site I’ve joined that is specific to tournaments. I’m really looking forward to putting in the hours and hard work studying MTTs. I’m a winning live low stakes cash game player but have always had a passion and interest for getting into tournaments.

Short back story: In mid 2017 I put together a plan to quit my job, move to Las Vegas and pursue poker full-time by 2019. In Jan 18′ the hotel I had worked at for 5 years got bought out. The new owners cut everyone’s hours and really put my game plan at a halt. Living in a rural town in northeast New Mexico, my options were very limited. If I could find another full-time job, which is a challenge by itself, I knew I would be taking a significant pay-cut and pushing back the time frame of my eventual goals. I had enough money saved up to be bankrolled for live 1-2 NL, so I said fuck it! Put in my two week notice and started the live grind. The closest card room to me is a 3 hour drive to Albuquerque. To long for a day trip, so I knew paying for a hotel room every night I stayed was going to be a big chunk of my profit. I was crushing 1-2 at close to $30/hr over my first couple hundred hours and was not far off from moving up to 1-3. On my last trip the transmission on my car went out *NotLikeThis* Buying a new car took 2/3 of my bankroll and I knew I was going to have to draw up a plan b to continue following my dreams.

Going Forward: I joined Global Poker at the beginning of May. I have very little experience playing online but the games are extremely soft compared to other sites I’ve tried out in the past. I’ve decided I want to dedicate all my time to studying and playing online tournaments.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this. I’m looking forward to the content and interacting with the community here at TPE. Best of luck on the grind!

Hi Steve,

Good luck with your goals! And welcome to TPE!

My advice for online poker: start playing micro’s 9-man single-table SNG’s; regular speed preferable. The fields are soft, the rake is lower compered to cash, the variance is lower compered to large fields tourneys, 6-max or HU and is a good start to learn tournaments strategy. I don’t know how the volume is in America at those, but it should give you a start. Play those until you have a decent BR to start playing tournaments.

Thanks for the advice Rustyrst! I’ve actually started playing SnG’s in the last few days. So you think SnG’s are profitable enough to build up a bankroll? The problem with Global Poker is there’s no rakeback program whatsoever. I was playing the $6.60 Regular 9 man SnGs. Over my first 10, I ran pretty bad but broke even, cashing 4 out 10, bubbling 2 of my 6 none cashes. I know this is a extremely small sample size but it got me thinking if these are profitable over the long run. If you multiple this sample by 10, I would be break even over 100 SnGs’s but would be paying $60 in rake with no rakeback program. What do you think?

You don’t need a rakeback program to build your BR, so don’t bother about it. Yes, as you said, the sample is small, but play them tight and aggressive and you will beat them.

Be careful on bubble and last 3 people, when you are ITM. Take decisions based on ICM. When you are chipleader on the bubble or in the last 3 people, take advantage of the table. Abuse them preflop with wide raises. When you are middle stack, let the short stack bust first and make the money or second place. Don’t get involved unless you have big hands. If the shortest stack has below 4bb, try to avoid questionable plays. Sometimes is best just to play only KK+ if the shortest stack has 4bb or less. It’s just not worth the price to risk to bust out. Oh, yes, if the shortstack is first to act and folds, biggest stack is on the BU and it folds, and you have let’s say 20BB and big blind has 15BB, yeah, it’s worth it to push on him pretty wide. He will fold most of his range if he is not a complete monkey. When you have the shortest stack, try to abuse the middle stacks by pushing into them. They won’t call you until they have a hand. Try to avoid to push into biggest stack if he’s in the BB. He will call you most of the time and you don’t want to create variance.

On the HU just do your thing. If you think your opponent has an edge on you, just play push or fold with 25big’s or less.

And that’s about it. I build my BR first time by playing those low stakes SNG’s mostly in that manner.

Hope this will help you!
