Hello everyone,
so Ive been going to these live games in my hometown, the casino just recently opened and there is a lot of new comers to the game. The games ussually go up to 20 people. The blinds go up different to every tournament, but ussually the dealers are slow and you cant really wait for good hands if you wanted to.
As there is a lot of fish, theres a lot of limped pots, everyone wants to see the flop and play from there, so the preflop game doesnt really happen there. Players are very sticky to the pots and hate folding. If youre card dead for a longer time blinds will get you so you have to make some moves eventually.
Question is how do you approach these games, do you limp with everyone and see a 3-6 way pot, or try to 3bet against looser players? Obviously the easy answer is get value from your good hands, but I see some good players there struggling as well riding the variance train, as its only 1 table and you cant really win them in the long term by having better knowledge by them as it is in online games.

I’m very interested in the response from senior TPEs members as well.  I play in some home games and tourneys that the players are much the same.  Frustrating trying to apply the lessons learned in TPE as it just seems like everyone is playing bingo.

Maybe that’s ideal, but it just seems like I get pulled into limping, seeing a cheap flop, and playing bingo right along with them.

I feel like I’m pulled down to their level and and not performing up to TPEs level.

I’ve played a ton of similar low level <£$50 pub/cardroom/daytime-casino type games.

A few thoughts but by no means extensive.

Resisting the limping culture and fighting against it, is the only thing that has got results.

Solid pre flop starting hands played hard (3/3.5x + 1bb per limper) and max value from made flopped hands will build your stack.

Be very tight in early position. Don’t get fancy. You don’t want 3 callers with AQ, KJ etc

Never check back expecting someone else to bet, they simply wont if they’ve missed but will probably call any draw.

You’ll always get value from 2 pair, sets etc. Top pair is the newb players nuts. Tbh so is second pair!

Knowing your push fold game late is essential in 5/6 hour games when the structures crank up.

Yes you will suffer draw outs but if you start raking pots you ‘might’ get a little respect.

If you actually enjoy the games you will get the most from them.

Laugh at bad beats, just smile at the horrendously played hands. No one likes a smart ar$e.

Dont bluff, use sound starting hands, solid positional sense and play hard

Agree with everything Kouman said. Especially, to laugh at the bad beats and smile at the crazily played hands. In games like these there is a huge social aspect and you can’t really just sit and nit it up and expect to get invited back. And I don’t even think nitting it up is the best way to exploit it either.  I think you want to promote the loose crazy play, but just be bit smarter about how you go about getting involved in a hand, and when you are in one. Games like these also run on a lot of emotion, so use this opportunity to work on your live tells, because they can be crazy obvious in these games. But it’s true, you’ll never win if you just play the limp-flop bingo game.

I always remember one of Ed Miller’s best lines (I forget which book) : ” Nobody is any better than anybody else at flopping hands.”

Be tighter, be looser, be the turn boss, value king, whatever, be SOMETHING, but don’t just try to hit hands. it’s a losing strategy. If that’s the way these guys are playing, then there is money to be made. Devise your strategy and execute.

And have fun! Those games can be a blast, and a gold mine!
