As a beginner and recreational player, most of the times that I played MTTs, I would end up folding my way/waiting for the nuts until I was close to the money, and then just hope I could win flips.  It kept me break even in 9-27 man S&Gs, but now as I try to learn more about aggression, and also better strategies for MTTs, I'm really struggling with how to adjust mentally to my newer style of play.

In the past three weeks of playing, I'm 0-20 in cashes.  Some of it is just plain old variance, but I'm also not applying my aggression properly, and need to pick better spots a lot of the time.  I realize that those things will come with more practice, and also some of the videos, but I really am struggling with how to approach it mentally.  I think the biggest thing is learning patience.  Up until now, I've played for maybe an hour or two at a time.  Now, I'm suddenly trying to adjust to playing for 3-8 hours or more.  And I'm just not handling it well.

So yes, any thoughts/videos on better handling variance, and also learning patient aggression while playing.

Thanks!  Mike

I would suggest trying to play smaller fields for now until you get used to ~4 hour sessions, then work up to big fields and 8hr+ MTTs.

What spots of 'aggression' are you unconfident with?

Hey Mike,

When to use aggresion correctly comes naturally for some people, and others have a hard time with it. Its awesome that you're recognnizing your leaks and asking for help about how to seal them up. One thing I can reccomend that i'm sure works is putting in more volume. The more tournaments you play, the more you learn. Its also a good way to not tilt over a few bad beats.

Have you tried looking really deeply at your hand histories? I suggest looking at those with another player and figuring out exactly what kind of spots you're having issues with.

Good luck man.

Hi: I just to put my 2 cents in on this.I seem to be playing much better than I did before joing TPE.Having said that I still have massive leaks, and struggle with my nitty side. However I seem to be getting it in good but wind up being the Bug and not the windshied. So one minute you think your BIGDOG. But alas still just a donk.

I like playing a mix of MTTs and STTs because of variance issues.  If you were already break even in SNGs, you should be able to apply some of your new skills there, too.  How many tables do you play?  If you are playing 4, maybe sign up for two of your preferred MTTs, and then play SNGs on the other two tables until you get deep and then you can just stop regging for anything else.  You'll be much more likely to have at least 1 or 2 cashes in a session, which definitely feels nice.  Eventually, you'll get used to the fact that losing an MTT is the most common result.
