Hello Dare2Dream,

Thanks so much for helping with this forum topic.  One question I have for you is I guess the metagame during a tournament and in particular individual hands.  Do you have any suggestions/tips for us to really concentrate during a hand.  I know that this question may be very open ended, but one area I need to keep getting better at is really break down the hand while it is going, and approach the best line to take with the villain, as well put the villain on their own line approach.

I think that sometimes I go on auto pilot while playing and auto fold before my turn when maybe if folded to me, with my position, I may want to open, etc.  I also need to have a better idea on when I may c bet and the villain c/calls, what they may have, and not be afraid to double barrel.  I know that some of these questions come from playing, board texture, etc, so I guess the ultimate question is…what is the trick to stay in the moment and really concentrate on each hand.  Any tricks to where we may have drifted off or not in the right mindset to get back to that state of mind would be great.

I know that sometimes what works for me…as silly as it may sound, is that I talk out loud to myself while the hands are going.  This really helps me while the hands are going.  Again sorry for the broad questions, but would love to hear any tips you may have.  Thanks.

I have trouble with this too, particularly when making big decisions on the river. I feel I am ok at breaking down hands away from the tables eg in magazines or forums, but sometimes this seems to desert me in real time.  I'd be interested in hearing any routines players have before making big decisions eg thinking back through the hand, checking the stack sizes, size of opponent's beg compared to pot etc.

I might try talking through the hand out loud – if the wife will allow it!

Hey Guys, this is a common problem for both Live and Online MTT players. It actually has more to do with switching off than it does switching on for a hand. What I mean by that, is if you dont switch off, or lower your intensity of focus when not involved in a hand, your focus levels over time will become depleted and cause you to zone out, or experience what I call Brain Faze.

I have created specific in hand routines for Live events, where by as soon as the first card is dealt to you, you siwtch your focus on, taking notice of every piece of action and every players mannerisms, the as soon as you fold your cards, you turn dwon the volume of focus, or switch off totally. This helps allow you to keep enough focus energy for the latter parts of live MTT sessions and has been a great help to the clinets I have worked with.

For online players, this is a lot more difficult. Sometimes you dont get a chance to switch off or turn the volume down, so you have to look at managing your focus better. Not reacting to hands is a fabulous focus energy saver, as reacting in an emotional way after a hand sap's a lot of your focus energy.

Are you guys quite emotional players that react both physically, emotionally or verbally during your sessions? The higher intensity to your reactions, the more focus energy you will use, leaving you in a position to have a BRAIN FART where you just find yourself in a bad spot and cant remember how you got there.

Make sure that during your breaks, youm totally switch off and also implement what I call- “Resetting your Physiology”. This is a great exercise to keep your mind actiavted as sitting in one spot for so long, your body and mind can become stagnent and start to function on a lower level. So every 30min, just remove your chair and do some short sharp exercise for 10-20sec. Drop and do 20 Push Ups, 20 Star Jumps something to get your mind and body re activated. This is an awesome technique to ensure your mind is always activated at a higher level.

Give these a try and let me know if you have any other questions 🙂

I often talk about a similar situation with some players like creating a quote for a business deal.

Pre Flop, Flop, Turn and River are all different times to gather as much info about the player/hand, so that when it comes time to deliver your quote, you will come out the end of the business deal/hand making a profit.

If you go walk about Pre Flop or on the Flop, then your quote will be a guestimate as you dont have all the relevant information on hand to make a precise analysis of the hand. When you are present, you can put ALL the pieces of the puzzle together to make a more accurate quote on the river, when it comes to what your hands value is Vs your opponents.

Hope this makes sense 🙂

Thanks Jamie. I guess the problem with switching off when you're not in a hand, is that you do need to be paying a certain amount of attention to develop reads on other players. I guess its about finding a balance. I liked the bit about “re-setting your physiology” and will definitely try to incorporate some push-ups into my sessions!

benf1, I also talk about turning down the volume of focus when not in a hand. This is still taking notice of the hand being played out, but not having the intensity you have when in a hand.

This might be the balance you are talking about.

Enjoy:)
