Hello, TPE!  This is my first time posting a hand to these forums.  I’ve learned a TON since joining the site about 2 months ago, and I’ve been looking for the opportunity to have something discussion-worthy to post.  I’m hoping this one meets that criteria.

The hand below took place in a $9k GTD, $11 rebuy/add-on tourney.  The villain (BTN) in this hand was, to me at least, an usual player type.  He’d been to my immediate left since about level 3 or so, and at the time he transferred, he was a MONSTER chip leader in the tournament, having amassed somewhere around 10 starting stacks at that point.  As you see below, he’s running about 16/5 over the sample we have, and I can say with high confidence that his 3-bet% was accurate despite the small sample.  That, coupled with what I noticed was a very low c-bet frequency, suggested this villain was as straightfoward as they come.  His dominant stack so early on was the only real anomaly to me, though I suppose it could have been some huge multi-way pot when he held the nuts.

In-game thoughts:

Preflop – Fairly standard raise here from CO.  I’m using a slightly larger sizing at this table to dissuade the 3-bet happy SB and BB players from playing back at me.  Villain (BTN) has been very fit-or-fold post flop, and has not put pressure on me at all to this point, so I’m expecting to take it down on the flop at a high frequency.  BB calling here complicates things a bit, so I’m expecting to have to slow down on the c-betting, depending on runout.

Flop – We nail the set, with 2 rather beautiful overcards and a draw-heavy board.  I expect the main villain to have a piece fairly often, and if he folds, BB is likely to check-raise a decent amount of the time.  I size up my c-bet from my more typical 1/4 to 1/3 pot due to the wider calling ranges I expect to see on this board.  When BTN calls, I’m assigning him a very strong continuing range, with KT the likely bottom.  BTN might not even raise KQ here, and I am not discounting any KQ combos from his range.  I’m not surprised at all to see BB fold.

Turn – As stated before, I’m not discounting KQ from villain’s range.  Against 95% of the players in this tournament field, I’m betting here and am very happy to get it in.  Against this particular villain, I don’t believe I would be a favorite if all the chips get into the middle.  I’m thinking that if I made any significant mistake(s) in the hand, that checking here might be one.  Thoughts?

River – River completes a straight, and KT now gets there, though I do figure to be ahead of a fair portion of villain’s range.

I left all of the river action in the spoiler section, because I’d like to hear what you guys think we should do here.

Thanks!

Thanks for the hand.

Pre is standard i think. Like the sizing.

Flop – I like the raise here as 1/3 though i think it’s a bit traditional, I have had a difficult time looking at these smallish bets on the flop as standard. I do tend to want to raise it bigger in this spot just for the exact reason you said, I believe his holding is KT or even KQ and since you said it was a strong continuing range. I ask myself this question, if I raise say 1/2 size pot, would he call? if I raise 60 or 75% would he call? This could very well be a great spot to do this in. This will then give you a better indication where you are in the turn.

Turn – You are Out of Position here and so this isn’t a great time to be cheaky. I believe this is a great value bet and take it down completely on the turn. Your board is very wet and you are out of position. You have too many river cards to fade so you want to bet. You are stringing when checking here Out of Position.

So as played here for the river being first to act and yep, the scare card of a Th hits the board which is probably what you didn’t want to see which then gives you a hard decision.

If assumption is right about BTN being fit-fold type of player we can assume he got a good piece of the flop. So the turn is actually a great card for the HERO and KQ is only small part of BTN range here. I believe BTN may have more K in his range, some Qx and some FD.  Following above it make sense to me to bet the turn as well – if BTN is in drew turn is the only street he will be willing to pay. If her raise we are in nasty spot, but I would still cry call.

As played BTN checked behind with all draws ion the board, so I would assume that he doesn’t have K (unless KQ). FD missed, but AJ (dd and hh is stiull in his range, 2 combs) got there. So we are beat by one comb KQs, missed FD will not pay us, but 2 combs of streets may pay. I would bet 5K-ish?? And fold to raise (crying again).

Checking and inducing bet from BTN is another option, but I like it much less. We may mis value from streets BTH can decided (probably right) not to bet. And frankly I do not see too much bluff hands, may be dome no A FD?

swhitelex nice sizing thoughts – I definitely find myself thinking not much about the sizing
