I know there is a plethora of information on this topic online (2+2, TPE etc) but I wanted to see what people think about bankroll management for online MTTS.

My situation- I have a full time job and make a solid income (slightly under 6figures in a safe industry where job loss is very unlikley) and have little expenses since I live with a parent. I’m currently trying to move up stakes online and recently hit a score for 10.3k in a $215 which is a buyin level way outside more normal range as i’m trying to stick to 20-30 ABI. After this score, the max buyin I’ve played is a $109 on sunday with a solid gtn/ soft field.  I’m just looking for guidance on what type of bankroll # i should stick to.

I planned to stick to 300-400 buyins at the start but found this much too conservative. I’ve tried to stick around 200-250 buyins level lately as I feel this lets me shot take along with allow for a downswing where I can adjust my average mtt buy in lower if need be. Is 250 buyins a solid # if I’m looking to not bust my roll and reload. I typically play 30-40 mtts on Saturday/sunday with maybe 10-20 on a friday night.  I currently have a tad under 7k in my roll and have downswing really hard since 10.3k bink…. feel my play is ok but just losing a majority of my flips along with the fact i’ve been studying etc…  For buyins, I tend to play anywhere from $3.30s-$109 with a majority of my play in the $11/22/33 range. I throw in solid $55 gtns/66/88/109s and only fire 1 bullet at these levels. I will also play solid gtn 3.30s/5.50/8.80s and will buy in for more than 1 if still a little deep and i feel the urge to. I would say i’ve been bad and have averaged around ABI of $30-35 lately and just wondering if this is fine. I can reload if need be but want to avoid at all costs. My name is WISEJK on ACR . Honestly, my only goal is to get to an ABI of around $35-50 if possible along with still following proper bankroll guidelines. I have 27% rb so Ive been clearing a small but nice rakebake dollar amount also. Thanks for any thoughts on my bankroll management/ thoughts on how i should proceed.

I binked a $66 for 1.5k yesterday which was nice after experiencing quite a gross downswing. BTW- just wanna state I think this site is great and hope the videos keep pumping out at a solid clip. I feel watching training videos on TPE have really helped my game and honestly wonder why more poker players don’t invest in a cheap subscription training site as it can really help winrate in mtts.

300-400 BI is pretty nitty even for people that don’t have a second source of income.

I’m from UK so I don’t know how big the fields on ACR are or how soft they are, but for someone in your position, I think you can mix in quite a few 100-200BIs into your regular schedule, but no harm in keeping those in the 11-33 range. Maybe try some more regular 55s and the softer 109s for example.

Game selection is an important factor too, although you might not have much choice if you’re in the US? I restrict my online play now to smaller sites that tend to be a bit softer. I also work full time so don’t have the time or inclination to grind out a tourney for 12 hours on Pokerstars anymore. Therefore I’m a bit more aggressive with my bankroll management as the comps I play are less variance-heavy and softer.

I think generally 250 buyins is very reasonable. One thing to definitely consider is field sizes. Smaller fields would warrant a smaller number of buyins, bigger fields would need more. I know ACR has much bigger fields than any other site which will lead to more variance. So having a bigger bankroll should make you feel much better when the inevitable downswings occur.

If 109s are your biggest buyin now, you could look into cutting those out of your schedule when you’re experiencing downswings. Then look to shot take after a big score or during your upswings.

Overall, 300 buyins at your abi should be nothing to stress over. Just make sure you’re staying fresh mentally and physically if you’re putting in a lot of hours.

Hope this helps a little. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions. Good luck!
