I recently played in a live tournament where all Antes were posted by the BB and Antes started immediately upon start of the tournament.  So first level was SB 100  BB 100 + 100 Ante, second level was SB 100 BB 200 + 100 Ante etc.  Starting stack size 20K.  How do you adjust your strategy for this kind of structure?  I was told by one of the dealers that more live tourneys are going to this structure, although I had never seen it before.

Thoughts?

I don’t think there is much strategic adjustment to make. The main thing, I guess, is that being the BB is more -EV than it otherwise would be, and being any other seat at the table is more +EV. So when short stacked, you should be a bit more inclined to shove from EP and a bit less inclined to shove from LP. But mostly it shouldn’t affect your play, it’s basically the same as a traditional ante.

Eventually all tournament poker will be played this way, so it’s good to get adjusted to it early on.

I think an interesting aspect of it is that recreational players will probably adapt by defending their BB wider than before – if their previous logic was “well, I’ve already got X amount out there, I guess I better call”, then that logic is going to apply doubly when they have to pay the ante also. They’re going to falsely believe that they’re getting better pot odds in some way.

What’s funny is that even though they were using pot odds to justify calling in the prior situation, they still weren’t calling wide enough – it may be that the BB paying the ante actually encourages weaker players to start defending closer to an optimal frequency.
