$570 buy in – $1,000,000 gtd this weekend at hard rock hollywood, FL.

V1 – C/O – around 50k stack – just moved to my table not even 15 min ago so not much of a read but he seems more active than nitty.

V2 – sb – around 35k stack – also hasn’t been at the table long so no relevant hands that I’ve seen him show down.

Me – btn – around 50k stack – not sure what these guys think of me since they’re pretty new.

Blinds: Just went to 500/1000/100  I think it’s level 10.

Folds around to V1 who raises to 2100.  I call on the with KheartTdiamond. V2 calls and bb folds.

Flop (8200): Kdiamond6diamond6club ————– V2 donks 2000 V1 calls I call.

Turn (14200): 8spade ————————– V2 checks V1 checks I bet 7000.  V2 raises to 30300 all in.  V1 folds.  I try to talk to him to get more of a read but he is completely unresponsive and motionless.  If I make the call and lose I leave myself with 15k.

Welcome!

You should check out my “Getting Off on the Right Foot” series. It will help you analyze spots like this, which is mostly a matter of playing around with an equity calculator and assessing your equity relative to a couple of hypothetical shoving ranges for the Villain.

I think there’s also a deeper question of what you’re looking to accomplish by betting the turn in the first place?

I highly recommend the ‘getting off on the right foot’ series. Even after playing and studying poker for the better part of 10 years, that series helped me tighten my fundamentals and identify some less than great thoughts that were hurting my decision making.

I tend to interpret small flop leads from the blinds as one of three things. I think villain is likely either trying to set the price for a marginal draw (ie. middle card flush draw), testing the water with a marginal made hand (any Kx), or trying not to scare customers with a monster hand that doesn’t want to risk a free card (trips, trips, and more trips). Facing the large turn check raise I think we can mostly rule out the first two categories.

I don’t hate the turn bet but I think it’s pretty marginal. SB might pay us 1 bet with worse Kx (only if they flat too wide preflop, but that’s not uncommon) but CO might only have K9s, and we have a handy blocker to the flush draw. I’d prefer looking for value on most rivers, especially if our response to a check-raise is anything but snap fold.

Some great points made already here. I would add that your focus in the moment of making the decision was most likely on the wrong thing – talking to your opponent to ‘get a read’ isn’t likely to be very useful if you don’t have a broader idea of what their range looks like for a certain spot in the first place.

Don’t spend time trying to use table talk/live reads to gain an advantage until you’ve already broken down the nature of the spot to a detailed degree, since it’s liable to lead you into a mentality of trying to figure out what your opponent has right now, rather than what their range looks like. This will lead you into difficulties in future when you come up against decent players with well-constructed ranges.

You perfectly summed up my first 7 or so years in poker, lol.

Haha. I imagine the same is true for a lot of players! We all get caught up trying to make soul reads when we first start out. After enough bad herocalls, it loses its appeal. smile
