Hi all,

Im new to TPE and this is my first post. Been grinding for about 5/6 years now mainly on the iPoker network which is popular in UK and Europe but some on Stars as well. Mainly I stick to lowish stakes $5/£10/$20.

Whilst there are many poor players at this level and I can usually spot them one of the things I sometime struggle with is the donk lead.

So there are a few limpers, Im in late position and raise. I get called by one of the limpers only. Flop comes and there's maybe 6-7 BBs in the pot and the donk leads out 1 BB. This has happened to me all all textures of flops so I want to know the general thinking…

I know this can be read dependant but I have heard a number of general approaches/strategies including:

– Sign of strength as they dont know how to get max value from a monster

– Treat as if a check

– Re-raise with any 2 as its a sign of weakness

Would welcome your thoughts.

I usually lean towards the last two.  Even if all three are true, and I've seen monsters played this way, they will be weak much more often than they have a real hand.  It usually seems to be a weak second pair type of hand or could be a weak draw trying to set their price.  I will almost always bet bet against a player that min donk bets.

Bigdog punishes donk leads in all of his videos, and it is a solid strategy. In fact the donle lead is so often NOT a quality hand that I take notes on individuals who do donk lead when actually strong. And those occassions are few and far between!

That’s a good shout Mike. I think your right the donk lead meaning strength is rarely the case. Playing at lower stakes this happens a lot so I’m going to, as a rule, raise every donk lead (unless I have read otherwise) and see how I go…. Will update my findings for you all..

this is so far off if you re facing a good oponent. A donk bet on the right board texture with a balanced range is such a powerfull tool.

for example:

CO raise, you call in the BB with J9hh flop comes Qh7s6d.

dont think you want to ch/c because your hand is to weak for that but on the other hand your hand is also to strong to ch/f not even talking about ch/r.

why is donking here so good:

1.) you can continue barreling on a lot of turn cards. basically every heart, additionally on all K`s,J`s,T`s,9`s, 8`s,5`s,

2.) you can win the pot right away if villain folds. you can even make him fold the best hand such as AJ,AK,AT, KJ. And the double barrel might even make him fold more hands such as 99,TT,88

3.) it just messes up most people and they pay you off if you hit your hand

cheers

I agree with you florian there is a time and a place, but in that situation you're saying to lead out for 1bb? That is what mike is saying, the 1bb donk lead is so often a poor hand. If you lead out for half pot or something it is a totally different story.

Donk lead usually is weakness but often they have something so think before you bluff.
Donk lead is really good if you have monster. I have had donks min raising me on every street and I have re-raised him and got a lot of value. Usually in case of flop 27Q If you have 77, AQ, KK etc you get a lot of valu from Q4 or A7. Only thing to watch is that they play the same way, so even with one pair and kicker J,Q,K,A they could play the same way – so watch out for that.

Yesterday I hit quads in position on 992 flop and I didn't  know how to play.
Pre flop agressor raised half a pot and I called, turn was K he checked and I bet and it was over.
Gueass I should bet 1-2BB 😀 😀

Game theoretically, a donk lead of 1BB is very close to a check, so I generally treat as the combination of two things:

1) For purposes of this hand, I treat it as a check.

2) I make a note on the player that he is terrible.
