Hi this is a $20 tournament online that a friend of mine played and he is in the money with 24 players left. $6,000 up top.
Blinds 2.5k/ 5k

No reads and he doesn’t use a Hud.

Hero on Button with 85k holding Ah 4h

UTG limps ( 100k stack )

Hero  calls 5k

Sb folds

BB checks  (25k stack)

Flop Kh Qc 2h   ( 22.5k)

BB all in 25K

UTG calls

Hero  ?

I think he should shove all in here but not sure.

Would love your view on this and also would you make the same play if it was a live tournament ?

I am not sure I like the limp with 17bb, and having BB short, rather fold without reads, if I know that V is a limper i might limp too to play some post flop.

Yeah, I would isolate otf, the range of utg should be something like Kx, Qx, 22, TT+, OESD, maybe gutshots… V will fold a lot, but i think that even when V does fold is profitable, haven´t done the math on this tow.

As played he has to get it in on the flop. By the time the action gets to him the pot is 70k ish and he has 80k behind. What more is he looking if he is going to limp behind with a sooooooted ace?

I’m going to add my voice to those saying stick it in there! Nut flush draw holds its equity well 3 handed, and if he successfully isolates he’s getting v good pot odds.

I may add though that his decision pre to limp behind opens him up to a world of hurt from the blinds, and if he isn’t sure what to do against these stack sizes when he flops the flush draw he should really look to have more of a plan when making decision pre as to what type of flop he’d be happy to see. If he isn’t comfortable getting in the nut flush draw with 17bb (minues chips already put in) then his limp pre can really compound to be a huge EV giveaway.

I understand the preflop stack size is awkward but I really do hate the limp behind. Maybe with >20 BBs there’s a better argument for it, but with 17 I think it’s not a good play.

But as played, you have to shove the flop. What else are you looking for when you limp preflop?

Thanks for your answers guys and I am inclined to agree with them.

Before I posted the hand I asked a very high profile pro and he said he liked to limp with the hand and that he would call off pre flop if the big blind shoved his 5 big blind stack.

Then when I flopped the nut flush draw and the UTg calls the big blind shove, he asked me do I think I can get him to fold if I shove all in. He said that he doesn’t think UTG would fold so the best play is to just call the 25k and see what he does on the turn. The pro’s big question to me was ” do I think I can get UTG to fold”.

He went on to say that I should fold if i didn’t improve on the turn and consider shoving if the UTG checked.

Now he did say it was close between the above play and shoving on the flop.

Maybe I got him on a bad daysmile

Don’t like the limp pre, shoving is probably much better.

On flop, there’s nothing to do but get it in. Just the thread title alone had me coming in here knowing I was going to advocate getting it in – if you have a nut draw like that with a short stack, it’s all you can really do.
