I really want to take some shots at some bigger tournys this weekend.  I am very comfortable playing the $26-$75.  I keep hearing in some videos that you like playing friday night because alot of pros take those nights off.  The question I have is if I am going to spend $165-$215 should I do it this friday with some smaller fields or sunday when the payouts are much greater?

what is your bankroll? I really advise against taking shots as regardless if you have an edge in the MTT you can very easily brick, and it may make you annoyed / want to take more shots in the future and this is a good way for your bankroll to decrease pretty steadily if you don’t get lucky and bink something.  I used to have a problem with taking shots and I’d really reccomend just grinding your limit and getting that bankroll for those mtts before you play them, so you feel more comfortable with losing.

however if you want to say F U to the above if I had to pick a day to take shots it would be sunday.  🙂

taking shots is totally fine, and in my opinion recommended, as long as you understand what “taking shots” actually means.

i think what ryan described is more bad bankroll management than taking shots. “taking shots” seems to me to implies that you’re not playing these games in your regular shedule, but rather taking shots at them when the games are good and you’re feeling good about your game and think you have a solid edge.

the latter is actually a great way to help build your bankroll as well as get some experience playing at the next level and perhaps against some more competent opponents.

i would suggest mixing in some satellites to the bigger events you want to take shots at. you want to be playing events that run lots of satellites anyway, as they’ll have softer fields. anyway, play satellites that are around your normal buy-in level, and accumulate seats that you can use those times you feel like taking shots.

as for the shots, take them when you are feeling good about your game. after you’ve been watching some videos, reading/posting strat and talking about hands/situations with friends, etc. definitely heed ryan’s advice and don’t take them too often or let bad runs make you play. because if you do you run the risk of damaging your bankroll or even going bust.

days with smaller fields and some of the bigger nighty tournaments have overlay are good nights. on the other hand, sundays offer huge fields and great value, certainly the best value. just more extreme variance.

so, really it depends on how risk-averse you are and how much variance you can handle–and how you run 😉

Thanks guys.  I wound up not playing anything bigger last night.  My bankroll is currently around $5k and I play very low volume.  Maybe 10 tournys in a week with most of those coming on Fri. night.  I didnt feel like mixing in 1 $165 or $215 would really impact me as far as my overall bankroll or mindset.  I really just want to give myself the best chance actually making some $$$.  Thanks for the feedback.

if u want more money lower your limits and up your volume. then me personally if i ship something say 2kish i might then take 1800 and then take 200 and freeroll a larger event ect, as far as time of day week ect i find late late nights very + ev many euro donks and spewy players that are tired , drunk , dumb ect and just hand u chips , best advice and most important rule theres is and never ever break this rule , stick to your buyin level for your bankroll. variance can kick in at anytime and you can go on downward spirals at anytime. 5k bankroll i think your still playing to high of limits 50 buyin limit max

Right now I am playing just strictly Micro. Every once it awhile my friend that watches me play sends me cash to play in $10+ buyins. I have done moderate in those, the times he has bought in for me (we agreed upon 60/40 split — I get 60) and we decided there will be makeup which I just get thru a couple of SnG’s and I give it back to him, if needed.

Anyways, what I am getting at is, I can only find the time to play 3 SCOOP’s this season. They are a buying of $11 and the other is $16.50. Should I take these shots? b/c essentially I am having the mindset that hey I can play these maybe run deep, increase my BR, and ultimately enjoy myself.

Also, I am considering sattying into those 3 but what are the recommendations on sattys? Don’t spend this X amount for the X amount buyin? Or should I just ask my friend to stake me for these?

What do you guys suggest?

I think the best option if possible is to get your friend to stake you for as many of the scoop events that you want to play.  That way you still have a chance at making some good money and don’t have to worry about playing outside of your bankroll.

However if this is not possible, the SCOOP is something that I would reccomend taking some shots if you can afford to as the fields will be ridiculously soft and should be a good opportunity to make some money.

I bet there a lot of sattellites as well, I would play the ones that are within your bankroll – it sounds like you grind SNGs on the side, you can turn the satellites into your grind and even if you win seats you can bank the T$ for future events.

Hope this helped , GL!

I also like the idea of satellite shots. Like Panda suggested play satellites that fit your BR and win enough seats so that you have a profit even if you don’t cash the big one. If you don’t win enough seats to have that cushion then don’t play the main. I use satellites as my main income and seldom even play the mains. Joining this site was my committment to actually take more shots.

I also suggest learning how to rape the rebuy satellites as they are the weakest of the weak fields.
