26bb eff. stacks. Blinds 500/250/50. Folded to CO 17/13 (24 hands). He raises 2.5x.
We have A9o in the BB. What’s your play? What do you determine from a 24 hand sample before making a decision?
If you fold what’s your 3betting range? What is your 3bet size or just jam?
How would your actions change with 20bb, 30bb?
How do they change if a guy is playing 12/10 or 5/5.
How does your action vary if you are on the button?

Forgive me if this is too general, but I am looking for an overall idea of how to play this spot and then I can improve it much more with individual hand histories.

I found this and it pretty much answered every question i had in my mind: …..g4_betting

If any of the guys here think they can add to that or disagree with the advised stack sizes please comment.

Again thanks for the link,  I checked it out and it seems pretty good but keep in mind its about 3 years old and the dynamics of the game have evolved. Its a short read and I would like to hear the opinions of one of the pros who read it.

I rewatched the Bigdog vid on 3bet shoves using the link as a guideline in my mind and seeing how far he deviates from it. I took notes, hopefully they help you too.

Hand 1: 1200/600/125
19.33bb eff. In the Big Blind
Read: villain min-raises the button nearly orbit. He is an MTT reg. Even though villain is blewow 20bb’s Bigdog knows this is part of villains game. He trusts his read.
Hand 2: No antes. 20bb’s with KQo in the hijack v villain on his immediate right.
Theory: You need a more showdownable hand shoving with no antes or you have to know that villain is opening light.
Read: Villain opens to 2.5x. He is extremely loose aggro and he would have folded v anyone else as there’s not a lot of money to be gained without antes.
Hand 3: 35bb AJo in the cut off v hijack
Read: Recent history with opponent, playing lots of pots and villain is chat tilting.
2 options: 3bet smallish to induce a 4bet bluff since they had been going at it. Alternatively 3bet jam.
Read: Villain hadn’t been 3xing that often so bigdog decided he didn’t want to take a race. By shoving he takes the play away from him and he feels villain can still even call with worse since he is tilty.
Note: This is an extreme 3bet shove, with these stack sizez, especially since there were bigger stacks behind that could wake up with a hand.
Hand 4: 19.4bb eff. Blinds 800/400/75.
Bigdog is the button with A6ss
Read: Villain was opening every pot with a big stack so he was sure he had plenty of fold equity.
Then against same villain, same tourney hand 5.
18bb eff. in the big blind with 83o.
Read: Villain continues to be extremely aggressive as does another player in late pos.
Important factor: The tourney is on the stone cold bubble. This is Bigdogs 3rd or 4th shove v same player. He was going to shove on the other guy too. The fact that this is the bubble is why he is shoving again with such a bad hand v these particular players.
Hand 6: 600/300 level with antes
18bb in hijack with KQo. Villain opens from mp1.
Read: Villain a loose reg who plays mostly head up sngs for high stakes.
Hand 7: 98o in sb
15bb eff. Small amount of fold equity, since villain is nearly close to correct in calling a shove with these stacks.
Important factor: Nobody is super deep at this table. So even though he doesn’t have a ton of chips he can significantly injure villains stack.  Villain who opened in the hijack would lose half his stack.

You can 3bet fold with stack sizes around 28-30bbs and much less its usually better to just shove marginal hands like a9o if they are opening 2.5x and not minraising.

26bb @ 250/500 you have 13000, villain opens to 1250 then its fine to shove if he’s been active and raise/folding enough.  If you have 14000 you can do the same.  When you get up to 15000 you can small 3bet/fold or small 3b/call.  If he minraises, adjust which stacksize you can 3b/fold with instead of 3b shoving.  Shoving  much more than 10x someone’s open is probably too much over a single open, you can use that as a guideline

This is such solid advice.  Just coming in to agree with it
