Question for you guys regarding a live tourney I was in yesterday.  It was a $150 buy in, 118 players and we are on the money bubble with 13 left.  Blinds are 5k/10k and I have 205k.  Folds to HJ and he jams for 85k.  Not much info on him but he definitely appears to be your typical recreational player. I look down at A9.  According to Nash I am pretty sure this is a call, but closer to the bottom of my range.  So my question is this, if a recreationally player in a live tourney jams here should I tighten up my calling range significantly?  I was new to the table so I really had no real read on this player other than it was a daily live tournament and his appearance suggesting he was not aware of his proper push fold ranges.  I think with ICM implications this is not just a snap call but maybe I am looking at it all wrong.

Sorry, pretty important to mention that I was directly to his left in the cutoff.

I fold. In addition to the bubble dynamic, many players just don’t jam nearly as wide as they should.

The dilemma has been solved as the poker guru has spoken. I got two different opinions from two very good players that I respect. However, once Foucault speaks  there is no more debate :)!  Fwiw, I did call and luckily he was shoving pretty light with K7 and my hand held!

With ICM implications this seems like a clear fold. The 85k you’re calling accounts for almost half your stack, plus you have three stacks behind you who can still wake up with a strong hand. If any of them cover you, you’re actually risking your tournament life by reshoving here, and you can’t call 85k and then just make a decision for your remaining chips, so it’s reshove or fold.

I think with ICM factors and tighter shoving ranges ATo would probably be a fold here as well, maybe even AJo. If you ran this calculation as a pure chipEV Nash shove, then that calculation is definitely pretty imperfect for the situation. Need to run it with ICM factored in.

I thought you were on the button and him to your left which would have been a decision, but from his HJ i would fold too many players behind, if you where button and him cutoff i prob would jam. The stack sizes behind you should also come into play, you should be a bit tighter if your 20bb eff compared to 10bb effective, esp with a9.

but im not a coach.
