This was brutal to see how the hand played out as would of put me in a strong position as was in the money with about 100 players left. Trying not to be results orientated would you think this is correct to fold? This was a low $11 tourney, table was quite active so far, this was a new table so only about 10-15 hands sample on players.

I don’t think we are getting the implied odds for flat calling and putting 10% of our stack in pre, which we could then maybe have to fold to a squeeze and I don’t love re-shoving with everyone left to act and his calling range I would expect to be over pairs and high cards.

I would shove something like 99+ AkAQs, but unsure if we could flat here with 88 & 77 with these stacks? Would you play it differently?

Your analysis is spot-on. This is a clear fold pre-flop, and while I certainly understand the frustration of seeing that you would have won a big pot, that’s the definition of results-oriented thinking. Well played!

Yeah playing middling pocket pairs in early position with less than 20bb is a recipe for disaster. I wouldn’t open 77 UTG+1 (88 is borderline), so I’m definitely not calling a raise. It’s always torture when we flop a nutted hand after folding but it makes it easier to move on if you’re confident that your decision was correct, which in this case it absolutely was.

You can’t Monday Morning Quarterback logical preflop folds simply based upon unlikely results oriented flops that happen. For example, let’s say you had 2-7 offsuit. Logical preflop fold right? Worst starting hand in NLHE. Well, as it happens, in this hand 2-7 would have flopped two pair. It doesn’t mean you should play it.
