Hi guys, I have been a member for about a month and this is my first post.

This hand is from the Honey Badger $5.50 tourney on Full Tilt.

It pays top 36 and there are 10 people left.

I am the chip leader with around $200k, the villain in this hand is about 4th chip leader with around $135k.

I am in the SB and the villain is the BB.

I was raising quite a bit and the BB was calling most of my raises.

I just wanted some thoughts on how I played my hand, If I should have done something differently perhaps.

Here is the hand:

Full Tilt - |1000/2000 NL - Holdem - 5 players

CO: 28.76 BB (VPIP: 8.24, PFR: 3.57, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 86)
BTN: 18.6 BB (VPIP: 7.69, PFR: 7.81, 3Bet Preflop: 9.09, Hands: 66)
Hero (SB): 100.94 BB
BB: 63.37 BB (VPIP: 18.00, PFR: 10.20, 3Bet Preflop: 4.17, Hands: 50)
UTG: 41.18 BB (VPIP: 16.00, PFR: 16.00, 3Bet Preflop: 13.64, Hands: 50)

5 players post ante of 0.13 BB, Hero posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.13 BB) Hero has 9h 8h

fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to 2.24 BB, BB calls 1.24 BB

Flop: (5.11 BB, 2 players) 8s 7d Kh
Hero bets 2.82 BB, BB raises to 7 BB, Hero calls 4.18 BB

Turn: (19.11 BB, 2 players) Td
Hero bets 11.5 BB, BB calls 11.5 BB

River: (42.11 BB, 2 players) Ah
Hero bets 48 BB, BB calls 42.5 BB and is all-in

Hero shows 9h 8h (One Pair, Eights) (Pre 32%, Flop 81%, Turn 66%)
BB shows 9d Ad (One Pair, Aces) (Pre 68%, Flop 19%, Turn 34%)
BB wins 127.12 BB

I put the villain on a broadway hand, with possibly a King.
My intention on the river was to push all in and make the villain decide for his whole stack.
I thought it would be very difficult for him to call with just one pair and risk bubbling the final table.
After tanking for almost the max time allowed, he called.

As for me, I think I would have checked the turn, planning to call most bets.  He showed strength on the flop, and with your bet size, I don't think you can fold out a hand that's better than your current pair of eights.  You should have lots of equity in a spot where it will be tough to get folds, so why not check and call.

As for converting your hand into a big bluff at the end, I see what you were trying to do and that took courage, and it was probably a decent card to bluff, but you could likely get that done with a smaller bet size like half pot, right?

Given the dynamic you describe with Villain, I think you should be opening a tighter than usual range from the SB, and opening to a full 3x when you open. 98s still belongs in your raising range, but you should have 3x'ed it, is what I'm saying.

I would bet the flop only if I expected Villain to float/bluff-raise (which seems a reasonable expectation, given the situation), and it would be with the intention of inducing a bluff. Having gotten what I wanted, I would check the turn. As played, I don't really get your rationale for the flop/turn play. If you think you're beat, fold the flop. If not, check and call the turn. I don't get why you'd call flop and then bluff the turn.

I don't mind the river shove, but if you're planning to do that, bet bigger on the turn. It looks really bluffy to bet 50% pot on one street and then more than 100% pot on the next. I think if you size turn differently you could do 60-70% on turn and then 70-80% on river, which would both tell a more believable story and give you better risk/reward on the river shove.

Give yourself a pat on the back for creativity, though. Although I think you could have done it better, you're absolutely right to be looking for opportunities to put pressure on one of the other chipleaders when you cover him, especially by so much, on the FT bubble. I know it's frustrating to make a mistake at this stage of the tournament, but this kind of experimentation will ultimately make you a better player.

Thanks for the analysis guys.

I was thinking that the river shove did probably look a bit bluffy.

But I thought if I am going to make him decide for half his chips, he would easily call if he thinks he is ahead.

But for all your chips is much harder if you aren't holding the nuts.

After I knew what he had I was very surprised he called with only A9.

He was behind so many hands including most other aces.

But good play by him to make the call.
