Ok, need thoughts…….

Sunday Major on WSOP.com in NJ.  $200  50k   1st place 13.5k.

We are in the money.  20 left.  I’m 13/20  2,500/5000 / 500

I have 155k on button on this hand.

UTG – Seems bad, unknown to me, but I have seen him before has 100k and opens to 10k.

UTG +2 – 158k  Seems ok, never played with him before.  not a reg that I know.

C/o – 130k   Seems BAD…. unknown to me.

*There are a few huge PROs still in this tourney and at my table.  Playing solid.

IN THIS HAND, UTG raises to 10k, UTG +2 flats, CO flats 10k.

I have TT on the button……..  30bbs  In the money. $500 made  1st place is 13k.

What is your play here?  3bet?  3bet to how much?  Jam?  Fold?

This is a pretty ugly spot.

I don’t think it would be viable to 3 bet fold situation, the stacks are just too awkward for it. The 3 bet would have to be on the larger size given the number of players in the hand say 38.5K-44K which basically means you are pot committed to call off if anyone 4bet jams on you. If you get flatted the effective stacks are going to be less than a pot size bet – which is going to end up a game of chicken. So I think the only real 3 bet option is to squeeze shove. I have done my best to replicate this in HRC with the slightly limited info you provided and with basic ICM calc. It actually says that 3 bet shoving TT in this spot is very slightly -eV. The best play seems to be to call in position and take a flop.

However, you have said who was in the blinds and what their stacks are as this will have an influence on the decision. Also are you 6 or 7 handed? I have assumed 7 and put the blinds at 16bb and 20bbs for the above calculation.

the current summary is

Fold – -eV play

Shove – v slightly -eV

Call – slightly +eV play (however the calculation assumes the hands get checked down post flop)

Like I said at the beginning its an ugly spot with no clear course of action. Which is why you are here asking lol. I hope this at least clarifies the fact that it is a tough and marginal spot and that whatever you chose to do was neither right nor wrong.

What would I have done?

Given that there is ~40k in the middle already and we cover 2 of the other stacks, I would probably have squeeze shoved. Although, table dynamics and who is in the blinds and with what stacks would come into the decision as well. You are i the bottom half of the leaderboard and will need to chip up at some point (although 30bb you have time). I might have taken this as a gamble spot.

sb was 2500  BB 5,000 ante 500

My stack was 13/20 in the tourney………  We are 6 or 7 handed.

From what I can remember…….  the SB & BB didn’t matter to me stack wise.

There’s, what, 40k in the pot already? I think this one is a jam. You probably can’t have a 3-bet/folding range with UTG’s stack being as it is so I think that actually benefits you here – because you basically have to jam your QQ+ to avoid looking too nutted, you can also jam other hands without it affecting the EV of your range too negatively.

I think jamming something like 99+ AQ+ here is probably good, and then since you’re on the BTN you can probably also flat a few hands like 88-66, some suited broadways, etc.

Wow…I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that goes into goofy WTH do I do here mode in situations like this.  I think folding here is a great option.  Fold, get up, go to the bathroom and curse the mirror for being put in that spot in the first place! MTFing son of a B – TTs with 83 callers before you!! ARgh!!!   At least that’s what I would want to do….

But of course on the serious side, I am glad you asked the question and happy to hear a shove is not a stupid play, nor is a call.  I often find myself in these spots, wishing that poker had a “phone a friend” chip that you could use once in a tourney, cause I sit there thinking I wish I could actually phone a friend and let them make the decision for me.  No help I know, but again, glad to hear that the struggle is real in a spot like this.
