Hi there,

I am currently in my second month of a TPE membership. Over the past 1.5 years, I have been grinding out a roll of 2500 dollars. Because I set aside 1000 dollars for investing in studying poker and software, I have 1500 dollars left as my current bankroll.

Some Background info

1.5 years ago I started playing on 888 poker, playing mainly 1 dollar sit n go’s. When I had like 100 dollars, I started mixing in some MTT’s and had some success in them. Half a year ago I moved a part of my bankroll to Pokerstars in order to clear the 600 dollar starting bonus playing six max $1.50 hypers multitabling 12-16 tables. These were quite easy to multi table after studying Nash using ICMizer2. Although I was not always able to play on a consistent basis due too university obligations, I managed to play 7268 of these 6-max hypers with a ROI of 4%.

However, I have difficulties winning on a consistent base in MTT’s on Pokerstars. The fields on Stars are huge, and instead of the ‘smooth’ graph I had on 888, my graph on Stars is descending all the time, except of a one 351 dollar score, over a 400 game sample size. My total profit on MTT’s on stars is 90 bucks with an average stake of 2.26$.

Although I feel like a have a reasonable edge in the 1-3$ MTT’s (based on the mathematically bad plays of fish in these tournaments), I don’t feel confident moving up stakes. This is because 1500$ is quite a lot of money for a poor university student… laugh

Goals

Despite the fact that I won’t be able to play consistently, I want to grind a higher volume while improving my game. I feel like my sweet spot for the amount of tables I play is between 6-9 tables for MTT’s. I will be playing close to all regular MTT’s (no bounty builders) on 888 and Pokerstars between 1 -3 dollar MTT’s, mixing in some turbos, hyperturbos and rebuys I feel confident playing in.

So for the next 6 months I want to:

-play at least 2500 MTT’s

-Multitable 6-9 tables at the time while playing my best poker. (For as far as this is possible while playing this volume).

-Watch at least 7 TPE videos a week

-Review hands I tagged during play using ICMizer 2 and flopzilla

Question

Is there anyone that has been in the same situation as that I am in now (considering bankroll and volume) but has been able to move up stakes?

Help and replies are appreciated.

With kind regards,

Tom ‘tommie_to’

Hi Tommie.

Good luck on your goal.

There is one statement that worries me in your post. It might be tough to play your best poker with 6-9tables.

I play poker for 1.5years and I know that anything above 4tables makes me play my game at much lower level. If I were you, I would rather play much fewer tables and focus on making the right moves, especially if you have troubles winning on Pokerstars. Then you can increase the number of tables/stakes.

Yes Tommie T, I have definitely been in that situation.

Frankly, every player, be they the Riceman or Phil Ivey, wants to “grind a higher volume while improving my game”.

100%, keep using Flopzilla and ICMizer. Use them as much as you can.

Stars’ fields are large: but mathematically speaking…if you stick with the large fields, IF you are a winning player, you will eventually receive a proportional win…ie larger than most other sites. (I’m still waiting for mine, as a Stars exclusive player!).

And no, I personally feel that 6-9 tables is optimal, at least for myself…when I’m rolled, I use seven.

And $1500 is a significant roll bro…you should be ok playing $7.50 buy in MTT’s, even on Stars. Frankly, I’d find $1500 a good roll for a guy earning significantly over average salary…let alone a uni student! It is, of course, all relative though. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I appreciate them smile

The past two weeks

Over the past two weeks I have been able to play 330 tournaments with 660$ of buy-ins, combined on Stars and 888 poker. I made 50$ of profit. Besides, a had a bb/100 of +8.66 over 20k hands on Stars and a +13.73 over 6.5k hands on 888. Although these results do not say that much, I am quite content with these results and the way I played and the way I am improving.

I started mixing in some 5$ deepstacked tournaments on both Stars and 888 poker, because these structures are great, and the field sizes on 888 poker for these tournaments are quite small (250-600 players). I ran deep in one of these on Stars with 1100$ on top, ended up 11th in a flip for a huge stack unfortunately…..

For the next weeks

Next week university starts again, so I will have less time for playing poker. I will probably just be playing on Friday evenings and Saturdays, because it won’t fit in during my weekly schedule.

About the 6-9 tabling (in response to kardi31)

I agree that 6-9 tabling makes my play at a lower level than playing 4 tables at the time. However, I think my profit per hour is higher 6-9 tabling, because I can get in more volume. On top of that, most of the time I end up playing fewer tables at the end of a session in which I am deep. In that way, I can still make my best decisions in high(er) equity spots.

About playing higher limits (in response to The Riceman)

I know I should be okay playing higher tournaments. However, I don’t feel confident loosing higher amounts of money short term than I do already frown. On top of that, I would first get a decent sample size on MTT’s on Stars (like 5k) on the stakes I currently play, to get a better feel for how big my edge is on the field. After this, I will decide if I will mix in some higher tournaments like the $7.50’s.

Another question

Over the last few weeks I noticed that my continuously registering of tournaments for more than 5 hours does not seem to be perfect for me. However I want to keep playing the volume I currently do, otherwise it will take ages to get a decent sample size. So I wonder if it makes sense to play in sets. So instead of playing 6-9 tables continuously, I could start like 20-tabling, playing down to a few deep runs (more than normally), so I would still be able to still make my best decisions in the highest equity spots. Might there be value in this, even if I loose a bit of my edge in the early stages of MTT’s?

Thanks for all the answers and supports!

With kind regards,

Tom ‘tommie_to’

Helllo tommie,
interseting thing to remember – a lot of profitable players earn huge amounts of money playing in live MTTs. I see you approach more like rushing trough everything, try playing 3-4 tables a few days while leaving more time to review you hands, post them, talk strategy. Tournament money is at the top and if you find yourself multitabling while being top 50 in some tourneys I believe you lose a lot of your edge. A few things you can do is make notes of previous plays from villains or useful stuff from their stats, see who is loose, weak, check players who sit next to you, think how you could adjust to the table.
The points is, I think you still have your 6max hypers mentality, tournaments are more about playing your villains and table in general.
