Hey TPE

History:

I started playing poker in 2006 during university and because I'm pretty competitive by nature I started searching the internet for information how to beat my friends with poker which back then was massively popular. Instead of finding information I discovered online poker sites and enjoyed hanging around in freerolls and after half a year of play I managed to bink a freeroll for $18 on absolute poker. I enjoyed the $18 for ~48hrs and after that was broke again and that made me feel pretty miserable that I decided that if I'd even win something again I'd just grind it up slowly… A few weeks later I discovered shasta's on Everest Poker and a few months later I was regularly playing the $10 sngs on everest and managed to work my way through the step system to qualify for the wsop in Vegas.. And there it was I realized that despite making some money I was a total fish, I met a few player who were members of training sites who had been thinking tonnes about the game. That was the eye opener I needed, as soon as I got back I registered for a few training sites and took a subscription at one of them.

In the following 6 years I lurked on the forums, watched tons of videos and slowly improved my game. I switched back and forth in cashgames, sitngoes, mtt's, plo, FLHE en NLHE. I loved reading about tilt, mindset and emotions and slowly worked my way up. After travelling the world for half a year and enjoying freedom I discovered that freedom is what I chase in life and poker allows a certain degree of freedom. After returning back home I decided to go pro and here I am in my first year as a poker pro, happy to have found a community dedicated to tournaments.

A little bit about my game: I play ABI of $40 mtt's, prefer the smaller fields (<1k players) as a love to play Final tables and come up top as the winner. after 2k mtt's I'm at 40% ROI without a big score so far. I used to play on euro sites but since april moved over to stars to be able to grind a bigger volume and only play the euro site sundays due to pretty soft fields.

I'll use this thread to post my goals both longterm and shortterm, keep track of progress as a poker player and for anything that comes to my mind

Goals

I'm not a believer of monetary goals as you can never control the outcome of a poker game and variance in mtt's is a btch so I'll skip those. My goals will be volume orientated and will be focused on improving as a player.

2013 goals

– grind 3k mtt's

– adapt a solid study discipline

– meet a lot of poker players and share thoughts with them

July goals

– Find out what series are worth to watch on TPE

– play around with ICMizer

– review hands on a daily basis.

– play 500 mtt's

For the first goal of July I could use your feedback, which series are worth it for players with decent fundamentals?

I'm quite new to the use of forums, I've always lurked on poker sites and never been an active member but I hope I can share thoughts with you guys here on TPE

Quick update:

been away to poland for a soccer trip which was a lot of fun and wouldn't have missed it at any cost:)

As for poker:

july goals:

volume doing ok, will definatly pass the 500 mtt mark before the end of the month (although it seems it'll be a loosing month)

-ICMizer: works great, unfortunatly it doesn't support the euro sites I play on so am still depending on SNGwiz for that.

-reviewing hands: has been my weakness and still is.. haven't reviewed a single hand despite marking a ton of hands, definatly should improve that part.

As for study: Seen some pretty interesting theory vids and am curious which videos are the best for 3/4/5 betting strategies, any Ideas?

Nice Elorean.
I sure am not a pro poker player. I have a job as a CFO in a 80.000.000 euro company. But I so like the game! I love poker and learning all about it.
I sure would like to grind more to, but time…

I think it is good to set your goals. I should do that also, but I don’t have a clue with my busy job how much MTT’s I should set as a goal without overdoing it. I am also married with kids.

Hope it goes well for you. I subscribed to this topic.

As someone who's not financially depending on poker (and has no intention ever to play poker for a living) I'd suggest not worry about volume but set goals for improving (if you like the competiveness of poker) and see if you can excell at the game rather then becoming a 'grinder' who just grinds for volume, rakeback etc.. with passion for the game just try to learn ever time you play. set goals for fun, 'study' leisure and goals what you'd like to achieve (play WSOP as a favourite for example)

This week has been a good week so far with my goals for study, I marked a bunch of hands where I 'm deep in a tournament and don't know if I made the right decisions (game dynacics, positional setup and ICM wise). Once I've done the numbers myself I'll post the hands here (or on the strategy forums) to see what you guys think about it. Also played around with ICMizer a couple of hours and watched 6 vids this week.

Thx for the support, now back to my sunday sessions:).

1. It just depends on your style. I would rec the theory series with Jace and Kid Cardiff on 3, 4, etc betting.

As far a gameflow, positional dynamic Marc is great at explaining his thoughts and the Chris Moon/Jace series are pretty good. Andrew Brokos is really analytical and great to start with as well. He has some great series on theory and hand reading and does an excellent job of explaining how he formulates his concepts.

2. You should youtube videos on ICM. There are videos here where they show the application in the middle of game flow, but just learn the in’s and out’s I would find a video dedicated specifically to ICMizer. Then watch videos on here for application in-game.

3. How many hands are you reviewing a day? I would set a number. In my experience, it helps to give myself a definable goal. Also, are you taking notes on a notepad in game and marking hands for review later? It can really help you be effiecient in hand reviews and help you recall your throught process from within the hand. Also, if you see a players line that pushed you off a hand or you really liked, take note of it during the break and add it to your bag of tricks.

Good Luck!

Thx Sprangle for the advice on the videos, Think I'll start with the Andrew Brokos series, sounds pretty interesting especially since most tournaments I play often play pretty deep for quite some time (I mainly play rebuy mtt's on euro sites).

just watched the BigdogP5s sunday million chop series and liked it although he was running hot as hell :). But especially his postflop play was really interesting and definatly will add some tricks to my arsenal.

2. Will definatly do this, never though about searching youtube:) Although a quick search through the material and I see a lot of 'wrong' thinking but there should be some good stuff I guess.

3. I'm marking a lot of hands but barely review them, it's my main weakness that stops my growth as a player.. I'm marking hands and got a bunch of categories which I'll use to mark them but barely ever get back to them. Whenever I'd like to post them on the forum I'm busy for 1/2 an hour as I'll write down my entire thought process and before finishing my thoug process I'm pretty much done with the hand analysis.. got to work on my discipline here.

So quick update:

Last month was my worst month this year (or maybe since I started? not sure about he last one though:). dropped around 150ABI but still I feel I played decent, The first week of august was not that great as well dropping another 50ABI.

As for the goals I set myself:

July goals

– Find out what series are worth to watch on TPE

(Done, watched ~20 vids by now including BigDogs and some theory vids).

– play around with ICMizer

(Done, got a good feeling how the program works and is fun to see.

– review hands on a daily basis.

(big fail! haven't reviewed a single hand in July so definatly room for improvement.)

– play 500 mtt's

(got in around 800 mtt's so passed this goal)

So new goals for August:

August goals

– Create some 6-15bb shoving range charts using CRev/Flopzilla/ICMizer

– watch a video daily

– volume : 400 mtt's + 300 sng

–  Work out each 2nd day

To achieve my goals I've altered my grinding schedule. Normally I'd wake up at 7:30AM,  grind 9-17, review 1/2 an hour (but kinda burned out most of the time so big fail there) and finish my poker day.

As for August I'll wake up at the same time, review + study 9-12, and grind from 12-18.
