    Love the first video mike…..
Will definitely look to up my aggression by 3 betting more as I can safely say I call way to much and put to much pressure on myself.
Look forward to the next installment
    Ps
    Welcome to tpe

I don’t see the problem with opening a lot of hands early or calling hands in position especially if your good at playing postflop. o

Hi, Mike, welcome to TPE! I’m eager to see the rest of this series, because the “old you” who looks to take flops sounds a lot like me. 🙂

In the interest of learning, I’m going to “push back” here in the comments on some of the spots where I’d rather call than 3B. Hopefully that will produce some conversation that’s helpful to others as well.

I didn’t find anything controversial in this video until 14:45, when you squeeze an EP raise with 99. Regardless of whether you are HU or multiway, this seems like a clear call to me. I think the value of “putting pressure” (presumably folding out) hands like AJ or preventing AK/AQ from bluffing you out postflop is outweighed by the cost of putting money in bad against bigger pairs and missing the opportunity to flop sets.

Basically my thinking is that I would love for the UTG+1 raiser to have AA/KK, and unless the min-raise is a tell, he easily could. If I 3-bet, I set him up to 4-bet me which drastically reduces the profitability of set mining if I get to see the flop at all. It might not be too likely in this exact spot, but I’d also be concerned about getting 4-bet AK in some similar spots and folding the best hand either pre or postflop as a result.

I’d still flat the 99 against Bakes (29:00) for some of the same reasons, but I can see more of an argument for 3-betting it. Granted it’s going to be tough playing OOP against him, but if he knows you’re 3-betting those sorts of medium strength hands, I think he can also make your life hell with both 4-bets and flats, and then you’re OOP in a larger pot.

    welcome!

first thing I notice: please use the PS theme in the replayer in the future. hero’s stacksize is very hard to read with the partypoker theme

Welcome Mike, fellow 49er here as well, class of ’02. Great first video!! Looking forward to the remainder of the series!

Although 3 betting so often instead of calling obviously worked for you in tourney, is the style exploitable to a good player? I have always been a fan of variation. Also, i see tourney was in 2011 and would be interested to know if you have maintained the same aggro/style since with the succcess rate you are happy with? Welcome and hope to see lot more of your videos..Being a complete nit myself, this first part somewhat scares me lol

Nice video and i love this style.
I still think tho there is some hands its not good to 3bet in particalur situations..
Like the nines here or good broadway which are playing too good postflop to 3beting them..

Cant wait to see others part!

gotta try that “only 3b when coming into the pot” in a few tourneys. haha, might be fun.

btw: bussa buss is / was david “bakes” baker.

I think the game has definitely changed enough in 2013 where you’d get played back at a lot more and postflop would not be as easy if you were to try the same stuff today.

Only 3 betting is pretty exploitable. It’s a good video to teach aggression but it also shouldn’t really be put into practice in small stakes mtt’s because it will be lighting money on fire there.

I agree that a video 2 years old is not at all what i want to see. The game is so much different today imo.

Interesting series! I have seen the coaching videos from the runner up in this tournament, Jonathan Little. His videos on this tournament is probably some of the most interesing MTT videos I’ve seen.

Would agree with other posters though, that this much agression probably won’t work as good in MTTs today. But “3bet/reraise rather than flat call” as a general guideline is excellent imo.

  13. SowersUNCC

Any style is exploitable, and like some comments before yours everything should be an option.

I’ve used this to propel me to be more aggressive and I am very happy with being more in charge, while isolating pots to get heads up more often.

Don’t ever try to do one thing only, especially when playing against other good players!

  14. SowersUNCC

There are many times I would also flat here, and often have in the past and current times @ the table.

However, for the point of what I was trying to do for this peticular tournament, I decided to put myself in different situations than I had previously been in.

I think even in the smaller stakes its a very useful strategy, the only thing youll find is more people calling you oop.

But, this is exactly what you want, guys to call you with j9ss and qto, they are basically lighting money on fire imo.

You have to be aware of that when playing those stakes that too often postflop youll actually need to value bet more than to bluff.

Which would involve more checking back after 3 betting them in positions than your usual continuation bet range.

There is a video series on Pokerstrategy for example. You need to have the highest level, diamond, to watch them though.

I beleive he has done something on his own site aswell.
