Excellent series and looking forward to future parts. Did you consider 3 Betting the QJs hand vs Apathy? Would you have 3 Bet if you were out of position? or vs a different opponent? or with deeper stacks? Thank you!

QJs hand is pretty pretty pretty interesting.
The flop massively favours villain and we probably have very few combos which could be raised for value with the intention of GII. Maybe QJs and TT only. And we have a huge number of hands that contain a pair plus gutshot that want to call 1 or more streets. Does that mean that we want to call our entire continuing range?
On the river, my first thought was that villain´s range looks fairly capped so we should bet large. But maybe that reasoning works better when there are plenty of bluffs in our range. And there are very few bluffs in our range on this river unless we turn a lot of Tx into bluffs.
Not that I would do it in game, but seems like we should be turning some Tx into (turn and river) bluffs if we want to avoid having a range which is too value heavy. But perhaps only against good players.

Thanks to a hand you pointed out to me while railing Breyer in the main, I understand why we shouldn’t raise here vs an observant player. I initally thought to bet 1300 on the river. Im thinking we need a size that is big enough to look like a bluff, but small enough to get called by one pair. It is a very cool spot.

You’re right that QJs can be a good 3-betting candidate, but here I prefer flatting. Some things that would make me more likely to 3bet it would be either deeper stacks or if I thought Villain had a weaker/wider opening range (for instance, if there were antes out there).

Nice post, LC. I do think against a very tough player it’s best not to have a raising range, but against weaker players you don’t have to worry so much about that.
I think you’re right about the river as well. Hero’s range is so strong that against a good player you only have two options, which is either to bet on the small side with a small range of strong hands and an even smaller range of airballs or to bet larger and turn Tx into bluffs. Although I don’t know that I’d play a lot of Tx this way anyway.

Good connection with that WSOP hand, I’d forgotten about that but you’re absolutely right. I doubt Apathy thinks in terms of bets looking like bluffs, at least not against a good player. A bet of any size could be a bluff. I mean, I don’t think he’s going to fold A5 to a bet of 300 because it doesn’t look like a bluff.
