Hey Matthew! I am a full time grinder, but I have not been able to make money over the last 4 months, a couple thousand MTTs already and quite a large downswing. Standard stuff for me is losing 400bb in EV over a single session, maybe mincashing 1 out of 20+ tournaments for a very long period of time now. When I played last year, I pretty much final tabeled atleast 1-3 tournaments in a week and now I can´t even manage a single FT in a month. I have studied more, put effort in it every day, my bb/100 is quite high, but still manage to not win those crucial flips or hold 80-20 when it is important. I understand the concept of variance, but this is a bit absurd….what the hell should I do? 🙂

    Short answer? Keep grinding!

Long answer – maybe play some different games to lower variance, 180man SNGs or other short forms of the game. There is absolutely no limit to MTT variance. You’ve laid out lots of factors there which indicate you’re playing good poker – if you’ve analysed your game and you’re confident you’re playing good poker, then your only option is to deal with it and keep on moving. I’ve been on a downswing/breakeven patch for about 9 months now – MTTs are brutal and a pretty stupid way to make a living sometimes. A couple thousand MTTs isn’t much in the grand scheme of things. If it seems a bit absurd, it’s because variance in MTTs is absurd!

just one small thing.. like madbaltic i’ve seen quite a few people talk about BB/100 in something related to MTTs.
I always wondered if that is even something I should look at as an MTT player because it doesnt make sense to me
why that should be a factor. The value of the chips change during a tournament and also some pots are way more important to win than others.
Especially at the later stage (to where you get less often), loosing key hands repeatedly will affect the ROI way more.

One thing i have learned about motivation is that its linked to dopamine, which is the reward chemical in your brain. If you are taking big dopamine hits in the form of porn or drugs etc. Basically nothing else is going to feel good compared to it and you have dulled your dopamine responses. and you are going to lose motivation for everything else as you arent getting enough dopamine in other areas as you should be.
