Hi TPE Team,

I am a member since 2014, but I didn’t had the opportunity to introduce myself. I’ve been playing poker for a few time by now, but never passed the mid-stakes. Since 2014 to 2016 I’ve been playing poker full-time from what I can recall, only online, live only for fun(some home games with friends and a few low stakes tournaments in Bucharest). My biggest scores were on 2015 when I rolled as a MF. I played mostly on Pokerstars and 888poker.

I don’t know how to upload a printscreen on this post, but you can look me up on sharkscope by username “rustyrst” and “rustyrst01”

Because of some issues in my personal life I had to cash out most of my bankroll a few times and now I’m running low on bankroll, which is somewhere around 150$ on Pokerstars for the moment.

In 2016 I had to get a job as an SQA Engineer and I quit playing poker full-time. I was still playing for some extra-income though.

At the moment the passion for the game has been “revived” and I want to come back to the poker world. I wasn’t a big fan of posting on forums, but since the love for poker has started again, I kinda feel like reading more, studying more and even begin posting on forum.

Since this thought has passed my mind again (since 2 or 3 months), I struggle with 2 big issues:

1. I don’t have time to play as much as I want. Before I quit playing poker full-time, I was playing mostly 5 days a week for 6 to 12 hours a day. (6 hours for a not so good day or if I hit something big in a short time, like a turbo tourney). Now I barely play 2 days a week for a maximum of 5 hours, that in the best case scenario. I can still multi-table, as I never quitted poker for good. I can still play from 8 to 12 tables at the same time. Do you have any advices for increasing volume as I still have a 9 to 5 job? I simply don’t know how to manage my job time and poker time… and don’t forget about personal life time, too. frownI was always a bad time manager, also in the past. Any books, articles or videos you can suggest in that directions could be useful(besides Ian Taylor, Matthew Hilger – The poker mindset – I already read it… 3 times lifetime 😛 )

2. My volume is weak, as said in point 1., but I can’t even grow playing those 1$ 180-men, 1.50$ 90-men knockout and 1$ 45-man on Pokerstars. I am trying to avoid Turbo’s for now for as long as I can, like 45-man turbo or 18-man turbo, but I open a few during the session though. The 9-man SNG for 1.5$ is simply not worth it in my opinion as the rake is too high and the payment too low. I tried for a period playing 3.5$ HU turbo, but I get bored after a few games. Cash is simply something that I don’t really enjoy playing, but I could take a chance if that is a way to grow faster my bankroll. The only thing is that I’m afraid I will get bored after playing 1 hour of 8 tables of cash games. What is your advice regarding this issue? Should I continue playing those 180, 90 KO and 45 man? Should I play the 9-man reg speed SNG’s instead, even though the rake is high for micro’s? Can you suggest some videos for those kind of SNGMT’s(preferably with the new blind structure on Pokerstars)?

Moving on other platforms is simply not an option. Because of the difference between currency ($ to RON – I live in Romania), the bank will charge me for transferring from $ to RON and after that, when depositing on other sites, from RON to $. In Romania, only Pokerstars, 888poker and Unibet has received the license.

I will look forward for your answers and any advise will be gladly received!

Good luck to you all and see you at the tables(microstakes players for the moment cool)!

See ya!

Sorry rusty, time is a finite resource. We all struggle with this. Do you have a family? I do, I have three kids, and a full time job. My weekends are taken up mostly with family things, or working/ studying to better my professional qualifications and prospects. So, between a full time job and all the other things I have going on at the weekend, where do I fit in a semi professional poker career?

Well the answer is that I have to get up at 4am to play! In fact, this is what I am doing now as I talk to you. Which means I need to go to bed early on weekend nights in order to be rested for the tables early the next day. Although game selection is somewhat limited, there are benefits to my schedule: smaller field sizes in the MTT’s I play, and because a lot of players at these times are either not rested, or drunk, or both, the quality of opposition is generally lower.

WRT advice on who to listen to on these matters, well you’re in the right place. I feel the era of books is over, ofc they still have their place on long journeys etc., but podcasts and training videos/ sites are where it is now imo. Check out the TPE Articles…there will be a load of great material there to help you, esp. by Matt Hunt (Ginger45) or Andrew Brokos (Foucault).

And listen to as many podcasts as you can…for lifestyle themed pods, concentrate on TPE’s Midstakes Living, again with Matt, and The Chirp Herm Show.

I’ll try to get back with some tips on BR building later…got to go fleece some drunk sit n go’ers!

edit: just made $800!

Hey Riceman,

I live for the moment only with my girlfriend, so is not that I have kids and I have to offer them some time, too. But is still hard to manage my time. In opposition to you, I play mostly at night, even during the week. Is the only time I can play. In weekends, I start my session earlier, and go through 12, maybe 1 o’clock in the night sometimes. You can still find some European guys who are playing chaos at those hours, because they are tired and drunk.

Regarding books, I agree with you that books are not that relevant lately as the game is always evolving and they are left behind ant it takes more time to publish a book instead of posting a video. Anyway, there are some books which are good for the mental part, not involving strategy, like the book mentioned by me in the first part, which I recommend it. I’m still watching some from the 2014’s to 2016’s videos which I had the opportunity to download from TPE. After growing my BR, I will definitely download some new ones. Until then, those are still good to watch.

As I said, I don’t feel like I’m into working at the actual job anymore. The payment is not that good, but my town is pretty small and it doesn’t have too many places where the wager is better. I love it in the beginning, but there are some people who likes to lick bosses’ ass(sorry my language, but is the truth), and I’m not like that. So I let them do their thing and take advantage of my spare time at work to listen to podcasts and read forums. Even the topic was posted from the office. I mostly listen to “Strategy Podcast” of “ Killingbird and RonFezBuddy”, Andrew Brokos’ podcast from “ThinkingPoker”, and sometimes the “Joe Rogan Experience” Podcast(offtopic, but is fun and interesting though) and read articles from TPE and hand analyzes from the forum.

Regarding game selection, I will stay into the 1$ 180, 45man, and 1.5$ 90man KO, but I will mix them with some satellites and some turbo MTT’s with micro buy-in (0.55$ to 1$). In the weekends, if I’ll have the time, I will mix some micro MTT’s with slower structure, too. I think I can manage well with those, as I have the experience from the past and I’m always trying to improve myself.

In the end, I want to shutout to Killingbird and BigDog(I’m a big fan, back from the twitch era smile ). Those were the good old days!

PS.: This was a pretty good week, managing to go up something like 40$. Started slow, but ended well. I’m in the near of 200$ zone. Hope I will past the 500$ limit soon.

See ya!
