Hey guys, double edition of What’s New this week which means a ton of new material. Andrew Brokos brings out another great theory series and we welcome our new resident maths wiz, Kevin “Merby” Doesrksen to the team! We also have new articles, blogs, forums posts and member scores!

Articles

We have two new articles out. One of them taking a theoretical view on a possible alternative approach for USA players in bitcoins, digital currency that that is still in the experimental stages and is predicted to either become stable or bust in the foreseeable future. The other article is about combating positional disadvantage with a variety of techniques, chiefly relative position and aggression.

This week we welcome a new pro onto the roster. Kevin “Merby” Doerksen brings his debut series which is appropriately based on mathematics in poker. The first part is an introduction into the role of maths in poker and breaks down some common misconceptions and fallacies surrounding it.  He describes poker as a game of incomplete information and contrasts it with some other classic games. He also breaks down how we gather information in poker and the methods commonly used to examine that. In part 2 he breaks into the nitty gritty maths, starting with pot odd and equity. Defining equity as the probability that your hand will be the best at showdown at any given moment. He has a very clear, lecture style presentation which means all of the information is clearly shown and explained. He also does an equity calculation by long hand to show how to correctly calculate the number of probability of winning a hand. Part 3 we break into the expected value calculations and we learn to compare the equity of different plays based on how our opponents range reacts. In the example Merby used we compare the equity of calling compared with folding, raise/calling, raise/folding and shoving. The maths and the conclusions found are extremely interesting and this series is a must for people that want to up their game. I am very much looking forward to the rest of the series where ICM calculations are the next topic to be discussed.

Andrew Brokos returns with another theory series to follow up his very successful debut series. This time he focuses on obtaining value and gives us a process for doing that. Similar to his last series Andrew sets up a very clear and simple process to break down hands into what he calls value targeting. This is basically determining which hands you are aiming to get value from. He also covers how to account for future streets and having a plan early in the hand to determine how many streets of value we can expect to get.  In part 2 he covers bet sizing and talks about betting the most that you expect the villains weaker range to be able to call with. He also talks about the trade off between bet size and calling frequency.  He also compares different betting lines and points out that we are willing to sacrifice value from parts of his range we perceive to be smaller in order to maximise value v the parts of his range we perceive to be larger or more frequent. In part 3 Andrew focuses on spots where we aren’t planning on going for 3 streets of value and compares frontloading (betting for value on earlier streets) with backloading (betting for value on later streets) and compares and contrasts the strengths and weaknesses of each. Part 4 of the series covers slow playing and ties it in with the value targeting technique covered in earlier series. He also makes some very strong points about the best hands to slow play given the range we beat and expect to be called by. Part 5 covers getting it in and planning the appropriate number of bets and sizing to comfortably stack off. He makes very interesting insights regarding seeing the river against a range that contains alot draws largely being –EV do to the negative freeroll it often creates. He finishes the series with some discussion of overbetting which rounds out and extremely impressive series! Also the ‘thinking poker podcast’ is a must for those who enjoy both Andrew’s videos and the TPE podcast!
